in the 90s i used to take my dear old mum to sunday car boot sales and of course this gave the excuse to buy Amiga stuff but i havent been a regular booter in atleast 10 or 15 years now.

are they still worth going to ? i went to one in the summer in Donacaster and the only classic thing i saw and a mega drive! PS1 or odd PS2

mostly PS3 games and xbox 360 stuff.

not an Amiga or ST or C64 in sight .....oh i miss the 90s

mike.

A lot of them now are mostly just market-stall tat sellers rather than real car booters. In my experience most of the people that do turn up with some retro goodness have decided that it's a "Rare collectors item, mate, not many of these left any more." And want some absurd price for their untested kit.

Better to fill your loft with PS1s and PS2s and wait 20 years to become a legend :p

I miss the 80's, but that's another story... :)
Anyway, since we don't have this kind of activities around here, i think it would be a good idea if members of our premises could do us the favor and take some pics for us to drool over of car boot sales.
Preferably while they track down retro-goodies! (am i asking too much?)

I've not to many car boots, went to few last and found nothing. Just seemed to be of traders they where charging more then I pay for stuff cash generators . So just tend ti look them few times week. Oldest I've found in them few snes games and quite a lot of megadrive master system games. A yellow c64 in my local one and a nes few weeks ago

As a kid in the 80s I remember seeing lots of Mattel Aquarius and vic20s and ti99 stuff then later sinclairs and ST's then the 500s and 1200s appeared later on.

Car boots

The car boots of today are not what they used to be at all. Hardly any retro stuff at all. and if you do find a bit of retro the seller tends to know what the value is and wants a daft price. Best thing I had last year was a tray of c64 tapes, around 70 or so for a fiver. The guy selling em didn't know what they were.

I don't drive so I don't do car boots, but a lot of people say it's not like it used to be, especially if you're not interested in anything from the PS1 onwards.

my last car boot i was very lucky (about 6 months ago)usually just junk.

2 x amiga external floppy drive
load of discs
squirrel pcmcia scsi & external scsi cdrom drive
couple of mice
all worked but 1 floppy has stretched belt.

Not much retr0 stuff at boot sales these days, but still the odd gem.

Just think of it as a nice walk in the countryside lol and anything you find is a bonus!

Many moons ago I use to go to car boots on a regular basses I remember one particular month I had bought several amiga 500s the following weekend I come across a z80 boxed mint condition I said to a friend who was with me not sure if its worth a buy so I thought about it and come to the decision I had bought enough amigas that month also I was on my motorcycle so I give it a miss.

Guess how much the seller wanted ? £5 pounds lol.

I quote this story to so many people and each time the decision I made becomes a little more bearable.

@mjnurney

Was that the Keepmoat car boot sale you went to this summer?

I did a similar thing, I hadn't been to a car boot since the 90's and decided get up one Sunday morning this summer, I went to the Keepmoat car boot and saw not a single piece of retro kit. Even though the car boot sale was huge, came away with a bag of sweets for my little girl and a bacon buttie.

These days you have to get there early to claim the good stuff before the "dealers" get it, so I'm told.

Used to go to Pontefract Lane a lot back in the 90s, generally coming away with at least one pirated Amiga game!

I can not complain, so far on carboots I bought:

3x CD32 (one with SX32 )
2x A1200 (one with 1230 mkIV)
4 A500, 2 A500+, 8 Atari ST
around 40 Spectrums - all sorts
a few C64, VIC20, Amstrads, RadioShack, MSX, HAWK and other small rubbish :)
carts, tapes, spectrum expansions, Jaguar, Dreamcast etc ...

Full loft of things I did not even had time to turn on and test ...

Car Boot sales are usually a disappointment, but you can occasionally dig up an absolute gem. I got a boxed A500 and a boxed A1200 from one last year, both in very good condition, and they cost me very little.

I still go to carboots. You have to get up early and be there about 6-6.30am to compete with the traders. I've been going for a few years, so i've got to know the faces of those that hoover up every gaming item in sight.

I often come back empty handed but there's been weeks when its all been worth it...:) Those are the days i live for! Highlight of last year was a PAL copy of The Firemen on the SNES

I went to the biggest one in my area on the August Bank Holiday and all I saw was a very grubby zx81. There were quite a few people trying to sell old stereos for very high prices. I had wasted a lie in and a good pair of boots.

It seems the landscape has changed, I do remember as a kid in the 80s seeing loads of Vic20 and spectrum stuff, and lots more electronics in general. It's kinda weird as there must have been less electronics around in 80s.

I'd recommend checking out charity shops instead - Sometimes the prices are a bit too much, but you're much more likely to find the odd bargain now and then.

I've rarely found anything pre-PS1 in a charity shop. Although one near me did have some Master System games. I didn't buy them because I didn't have a Master System at the time.
