Sometimes I got too much time on my hand. I didn't get to sell my old core 2 duo machine. So I took the valuable parts out and binned the rest. But I kept the PSU and i wanted to make a bench psu out of it. So now i got a psu that i can easily connect +/-12v, 5v and 3.3v stuff to. Need to find a way to get 9v out of it too.

But to my question. From my old car I had an active sub. so just for fun i connected it (the psu does 41 amp @ 12v, the sub has a 25 amp fuse. power enough). I knew it was crappy, but the sub sounded like a smoker that was out running. IT is a non vented case whatever it is called. Does it need the cramped room of a car booth to work properly? since it was in my booth the last time i couldn't hear the "out of breath" part. Not that it matter, was just because it was fun to try. But it is a cheap one, so it could just be because it is a POS.

at least it still works if i ever bother to sell it.

maybe your audio source is too loud, causing the input on the sub to saturate.

That could be. Since my amp doesn't have a dedicated sub out, i just plugged it into tape out. but i'll adjust the volume on the pc instead.

The cabin gain in a car massively boost the low frequency response of a sub.

Put the same sub in a large room, and you'll end up with very little low end compared to in the car ;)

when i adjusted the volume with the computer, it worked like a charm. tuned the sub down to take the low end that the speakers didn't take and the sound felt natural. So when i turned it off, it felt like something missing. Thanks for the tip :)

Regarding your PSU question (how to get 9V). The easiest way to do this would be to add a small circuit to the 12V output using a L78S09 (and a few capacitors) to regulate the voltage down. This would give you a 9V 2A output. Unfortunately a Computer PSU doesn't have any point where you can take 9V directly from the PCB.

Bryce.
