I've got a CD32 and I'm experiencing a strange issue with Port 2, I was hoping some kind expert to help give some advice!

First, Port 1 works fine, but when I try and play a two player game and as soon as I connect a Joypad (Competition Pro CD32 one) into Port 2, the CD32 acts like it's getting a constant "up" trigger from the Joypad (i.e if you're playing Chaos Engine, the second player will constantly move up). Fire works fine, other directions only occasionally work (it's as if the amount of times the CD32 is receiving an up command makes it almost impossible for it to read other direction commands from the joypad).

I take the Joypad out and eventually the character will stop moving up. I connect the Joypad, the character instantly starts moving up.

I've opened the CD32 and seen if there's any potential short circuit on the shielding, I've also covered it in electrical tape - just in case - but the problem isn't fixed. Likewise, if I attach a mouse to the port, the mouse pointer constantly moves up.

For a while I did have one of the CD32 riser/memory expansion boards and I'm not sure if that caused the problem (however, it did highlight the issue as I couldn't use Workbench).

Any ideas on what the problem could be? I also have zero hardware skills, so I can't do anything like replace resistors, capacitors etc. But if that is likely the problem, is there anywhere that does CD32 repairs? I'd like to be able to play some truly amazing two player games with my son! ;-)

Many thanks!

Unfortunately it sounds like the chip located at U34 again, refer to this thread:

Another reference for people with this problem:
This chip is pin compatible with the 74LS166 at U34

Also as a footnote..never plug joysticks or mice into the CD32 when it is powered up as you have a great chance of damaging components, always turn off before plugging in any devices

Thank you!

I'm not going to be able to solder that myself (I could try, but I'm terrible at soldering), I need to get the CD32 re-capped anyway, I'll have to ask if they'd be able to do this too (I'm presuming it's not too difficult if you know how to solder!)

I'll have to remember about plugging joypads and mice when it's on - it's a difficult thing these days as I typically don't have my CD32 setup with joypads connected all the time (like in the old days). I've probably caused a problem by putting in another controller when it's been switched on.

Again, thanks for the help as it sounds like the problem can be fixed!

As the CD32 is now a sought after console and commands a high price on the market then it will be a wise decision to get it recapped and ask the person to replace the U34 chip aswell to hopefully cure the fault
