I bought one, thanks. Very cheap indeed.
One of my San Disk's Extreme is a wrong type according to HDTools. I suspect it's fake as label is a bit different than others. eBay is full of fake SanDisk card as they used to be very expensive.

If your Sandisk gives 'Error type 7' just type in the name/brand manually and continue

Maxell is a cheap brand? I remember them making quality cassettes in the 90s... or am i remembering things wrong?

On topic... please check to see if they work pcmcia please, I only have the Kingston flower cards and they work on ide but not pcmcia :(

What I mean is they are great value for branded cf's I've got to be careful as not to stroll into the rhelmes of price driving.

When the next lot come I'll check in PCMCIA :-)

It is a good price I have seen USED cards go for more
some as high as NEW prices, I guess people get carried away ?

I just ignored that error, but then I got problem installing some program's that works on other cards. Like IDEFIX 97.

Just to update on these, my next 10 arrived and I've opened two of them to find the capacity is smaller then the original one I bought which is a bit of a concern. The original was 3.75gb and these two are 3.55gb :coffee:

I've tested these two in PCMCIA and pleased to say they work however they're too small for my Image files which means I'll have to prepare one from scratch and image it for use internally, not a really big deal but an annoyance.

I don't want to speculate on the reasons for the mis-match in size I will let you draw your own conclusions.

I will certainly do more testing before using them for my CF HDD service and am considering asking if I can return the 8 that I haven't opened yet.

Still as a cheap CF solution for our Amiga's I have no doubt they will serve well, I just have my own concerns to their integrity now.

Just a few more observations. I've just prepped one of the new ones in my A1200, just to create the RDB before moving to Windows, card was detected fine.

Just partitioned in OS3.9 with PFS3 an copied Classic Workbench to DH0, it was really fast.

I'm now filling it up with WHDLoad Games, there's no doubting that it's High Speed Media, it's filling up much quicker then my Generic CF's did

I'm just baffled at why the same brand CF's would be different capacities...

Just to further update, the CF filled up just fine, it took less than 40 minutes to copy 3.2gb of WHDLoad Games which is really quick, some CF's I have had to wait over 2 hours!

I've tested it for around 1 hour playing various Games in my A1200, all seems ok, will do more tests before certifying them for my CF service but it seems aside from the capacity issue they're fine.

If anyone else buys one let me know what capacity you get out of interest.

My verdict so far is that they still offer great value and work on both IDE & PCMCIA so for the price vs Sandisk/etc make a viable option.

thanks for your testing updates steve I will give feedback on mine when received

Cheers mate, let me know how you get on.

I opened all 10 up and they're the same size so a little stumped why they're different to the 1 test CF I bought :picard

A different batch maybe?

Anyway, they all seem ok just a PITA for me as all my images as said are larger

Are they the same size as the blue and white generic ones?

Are they the same size as the blue and white generic ones?

The first one was bigger, in fact the biggest of all the 4gb CF's I have ever had, that's why I jumped in and bought 10 more!

The latest 10 are smaller and by quite a bit too.

Most of the Generic ones I bought were 3.7gb but I have had a few 3.6gb ones as I guess they don't always use the same media.

Most brands, Kingston, Sandisk & Transcend are all smaller then the generic ones!

But these latest 10 are the smallest I've ever had. When I get back on the PC I will list the exact sizes of the CF's in bytes that I have here :)

As promised here are the actual sizes of the CF cards that I use/have:

The first Maxell one was 4,013,856 bytes.
The next batch of Maxell are 3,735,144 bytes.

As you can see quite a difference. I've been testing them again though and they seem reliable, although I probably wont use them for my setup service I'll bundle them with Amiga's I sell as being smaller then I all my images it makes preparing them more hassle then the £10 I make is worth lol.

I would still recommend them as a cheap CF HDD solution though, even with the lower capacity it's still enough for 2200 Games with enough space for the Demos pack as well

Remember as well as working on IDE they also work in PCMCIA which is a nice bonus, buy two of these and you're sorted

The other CF's I have here are Transcend 133x, these are the ones currently offered in my setup service, they are 3,915,576 bytes.

My Generic CF's which I no longer have any of here were 3,940,272 which was a little bit annoying when I got the Transcend's they were too small for the bulk of my images although I had some smaller images as I already used Transcend on my own Amiga's so it wasn't really a big deal and was expected.

Lastly my only Sandisk 4gb CF (30mb/sec type) is 3,906,560 bytes, but I use that in PCMCIA :)

I have one Kingston (flower type) here but not one that I can test right now as it's inside a closed A1200, IIRC they are 3,882,817 bytes, but I'd need to double check! Also IIRC some of the Generic ones I've had were also this size.

Probably not that useful info but at least it's out there now

Got one, it is reported as :
4,101,865,472 bytes = 3.81 GB

My Transcend = 3,989,643,264 bytes = 3.71 GB

im disk parting now and setting up with sfs to see how big it is for the miggy

it was formatted as fat32

here is it in sfs 3.908gb
