Chinon Floppy Drive Help.

Hi just bought a Chinon floppy drive fron a fellow Amibayer for my A600. I was assured that it worked fine before been posted and I have no reason not to beleive otherwise .

When I put the drive in my A600 I get the familiar click, but very quiet. If I put any disks in (which I am sure works, as they do on my A1200) it begins to read the disk for a few seconds then goes back to the start up screen.

I have also tried this in my A1200 with the same results.

I have noticed that there are a number of jumpers on the drive and have searched on the internet to see if these are in the right position and I am confident they are. I have also double checked the floppy cable is the correct way.

Still no joy . Any ideas??

If I remember correctly some Chinon drives have jumper settings. Maybe you should try to change them?

Is the Floppy cable plugged in the right way round?

Double checked cable as well.

On the A600, there nothing more to check than cables and DS0 jumper.
If everything ok, drive is not working.
From what you said, it could be a misalignement of the heads.

Hi a couple of time i pluged the serail cable around the wrong way and that shorted out the floppy driveoh:

Definately plugged in the right way, i know little about Amigas but ive been repairing PC's for the past 12 years, unfortunatly its my job so im pretty sure i got it the right way round.

If its clicking and activating when a disk gets inserted it appears theres not a heck of a lot up. This is the same response you get when you insert a blank disk... so somethings just preventing it reading the disk properly.

Anyone know what could do this? As mentioned it could be head misalignment if its had a knock in the post or something. Is there anything else atall???

Yeah same as I have tried, would be pretty difficult to actually plug the cable in the wrong way round as you would have to really twist it to make it fit.

Its easier than you might think, because I've that mistake and it does exacty what you describe.

I know what you mean, when I took the drive out of my 1200 and made a note of were pin 1 went and made sure I plugged it in correctly. Anyway not to worry its not the end of the world only a non working floppy drive

As for the Chinon drive, it's hard to call. It does sound like it might be deaded. For the sake of argument, try the ribbon both ways up, you won't damage anything (Well, I've never damaged anything despite getting the cable the wrong way round on countless occasions!) Good luck with resurrecting your miggy!
