Friend asked me to help him over the phone setting up OS 3.9... he shouldn't have asked me, as I have no clue, so I'd rather ask here first...

He recently acquired an A4000 with a 060 CPU card (he just sent me a picture of it, it's an XC68060) and the hard drive is bust, so he got himself a new one. The machine has a CD-ROM drive and the stock floppy, he got an OS 3.9 CD too.

Now, how would one proceed from here, with the given situation:

Workbench disk set
No A3630 / A3640
Blank HDD
Just a OS 3.9 CD and Kickstart 3.1

IIRC you can't boot from a WB disk with a 060 CPU as the libs are missing, and the machine doesn't have its stock CPU. Before I drive 300km to bring him my A3640, would there be something he could try?

why not setup the HDD with winuae , copy the 060 libs too and then just use it in his A4000? he can do all that from the pc, all he needs is to connect the HDD

My 060's boot with plain workbench 3.1 Disk (or it might me 3.1 Install Disk) :)

Thomas at EAB made a nice guide:

Yeah it just boots. It won't boot once installed you need to install workbench and then copy the libs before reboot.

If I were you though, I would partition the drive on the amiga, and then use winuae to install os 3.9 as per Johnim install guide.

I am quite lazy myself and I even don't install cdrom drive, I just point to Amiga os 3.9 and just name it the right name, then you can install from it.

Unfortunately my buddy needs to get this done and not me, so I'll see if that helps him. I will just make him sign up here if he has further troubles and point him to this thread

Thanks for your help so far.

yes you can boot to workbench from the 3.1 floppy, but dont try it from the install disk because it has commodores 040 library and it will crash on an 060 machine.

@Dragonheart

If you come to London and have a blank HDD from your friend I can do the install and you can take it back, I have HDD caddy's so it's really simple from WinUAE to do that adding 060 libs and any files he needs like IDEFix for the CDROM, etc :)

Otherwise he should follow one of the guides from johnim, etc

Steve.

Shouldn't be a problem. We could combine this with the planned beer session
I'll ask him!
