Hi Group,

I purchased a local Commodore collection this last week which contained two HD-200 hard drives in it. They did not have power supplies. Question: I have a Commodore 1541-II,1571-II,1581 power supply that has the power plug that fits. BUT, is it the same volts/amps that the Creative Micro Designs unit have? I don't want a 'meltdown' by using an incorrect psu.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob,
Having owned a CMD HD myself in the past, I can tell that:
1. Yes, the power connecter is the same on a 1581/1541-II vs a CMD HD and the pinout is the same
2. However, the power delivered by a 1581 drive PSU is too weak for a CMD HD and that can kill the PSU. If that happens, usually the voltage regulators die first and the PSU can deliver excessive voltage that will damage the CMD HD or any other device eventually connected to it.

The official PSU that was sold along with CMD HDs were rated for 5Vdc @ 1.5A and 12Vdc @ 1.5A. Usually, purchasing a power supply designed for external hard drives will provide you with exactly what you need. All that's needed then is to attach a proper 4 pin DIN connector and you can use your 1581 PSU as a reference.

Thanks Beavis. Oh, and thanks for the link to the manual. I see that the diagram in Appendix H is mirror imaged right-to-left from the diagram on the bottom of the "1541-II/1571-II-1581". I guess that's because one is an "innie" and the other is an "outie", perhaps. I'll ponder this a bit. I'm in no hurry.

The guy I got the CMD stuff was a Geos/Wheels power user. So, I was able to get a lot of CMD stuff. I read somewhere that Creative Micro Designs made their own power supplies also. This is all fun stuff...

Thanks again eslapion! Where do I purchase the correct psu? I thought that it was too simple to use what I had...

I remember people using Amiga PSUs with a modified connector for their HD20s. That should have enough power for more power-hungry hard drives. Some of them need quite a lot of current during spin-up.

I wonder if these would be suitable, they are (supposedly) rated to 2A on both the 5v and 12v

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commodore-1541-II-1581-Excelerator-Switching-Power-Supply-120-240V-50-60Hz-/301849442301?hash=item4647a0f7fd:g:daIAAOSwDNdVt1k~

this guy has them a little cheaper:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMMODORE-6...052294?hash=item43e77597c6:g:FbAAAMXQqfZRoAQv

and another seller lists them as suitable for the CMD HD-40, so i would guess so...
They are rated for 2A on both voltages so yes, they are adequate.

I think CDTV32 also uses that.
