Hi there,

I have three commodore Plus 4's all with the same problem (will power on but only show a black screen through the RF output). As the most common cause of this is the TED chip and I have tried swapping the chips amongst the three machines I am assuming the TED chips have gone in all three.

I'd like to buy a working TED chip to put my theory to the test, if I am right I'd then like to buy a couple more to hopefully get all three machines working. If I'm wrong I'll probably need three CPU chips instead.

So if anyone has any suitable chips please let me know, and if you have another suggestion as to what might be wrong, I'd be happy to hear from you too.

Cheers,
Tinkerdog

Go for replacement cpu chips first.

Trust me :)

Thanks, sounds good, is there any way of testing if it is the cpu rather than the TED? How about powering the machine up without the cpu installed and then without the ted installed. If the CPU is dead but the TED works surely it'd work the same with or without the chip, or is that too simplified?

Now looking for at least 1 working Plus 4 CPU (8501) chip.

Cheers,
Tinkerdog

Every faulty plus4 that has passed through my hands has had a dead cpu...
I can't guarantee that is your case obviously but given a choice I would change the cpu first.

I have a working TED you are welcome to try but I think you will still get the ole black screen.

You have tried reseating the processor or applying hard pressure on it whilst switching on as I have found some of the sockets to have poor contact too.

TC :)

I've swapped the CPU's from the other two Machines into the newest machine, and it didn't help, I also reseated and used contact cleaner without any success as well, however I didn't try holding it down while powering it on. Worth a try I suppose. Is it possible to change the title of my powt i wonder?
