Saw this the other day. Looks like a massive rip off.

Basically a C64 emulator in a damn ugly case! If they are going to the trouble, why not keep the original case shape.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger.:p
Just read it this moaning, and thought like sharing, that's all.
And the pic is just a render, and hey, nowt beats the original.

I would be all for a new motherboard that fits into classic cases or a new case as long as it boots up just like the old ones, takes carts and floppy drives, etc... These emulator based ones that lack original ports are not cool.

There was a thread about this earlier.. Looks like a scam since it's one of those funding options where they keep the money even if they don't reach their goal.

In that case it's certainly a scam, and I would like to warn everyone against participating.
But hey, just sharing a bit of news, didn't know that it was discussed before.

Maybe I am missing something guys, but whether or not I support the campaign depends on other things tbh. IE Darren was part (i do believe) of the team to bring the DTV to market with Jeri Elsworth and Andreas on board who is well known in the 64 scene, so I do not see a scam. For me its about its functionality.

1 -Lets be honest, the 64's main draw back is the display quality, ie no RGB. As the 64 comes with HDMI it could be the pick up and play 64 on my LCD I have been looking for :-)
2 -Also is the SD Card solution fully 1541 Compatible ? Or is a SD2IEC interface? (As there is no Serial Interface to attach a real 1541,1581 etc)
3 -Yes it could well be a PI2 or 3 in the case, but if they devise a clean front end so that it boots straight into 64 basic 2.0 and feels like a 64, then this is not a bad thing.
4 -Price for the dekstop is £106. Lets be honest here, to buy a PI2 then make the case, and connect the keyboard in such a clean form factor will probably cost the same if not more (PI2, Keyrah, USB Hubs etc etc)
5 - Possible DTV compatability in the future :-)

If you compare this to the Vega, it seems to be a more rounded machine (IE has a keyboard :-) ) and trying to stick to the classic design.

Not trying start a war of words, just my thoughts :-) as I love the 64/128 machines so much :-)

^^^

the reason I got a mist fpga, turn it on with my C64 sd card in and it boots almost as fast as a real C64 with VGA output. so for me if the above c64 has to spend 30 seconds or so booting linux of some sort then an emulator then its not for me. if like the mist it has an FPGA and boots to a c64 boot screen then it sounds pretty good.

Well, if I want to use an emulator, I will use Vice... It also displays on my new LCD monitor so... For my real gaming, I'll just keep using my C64 or 128.

You can't open a hardware crowdfunding project on Kickstarter without a working prototype. You also NEVER get the money without full funding of the project. Neither of this is true on Indiegogo if they choose 'flexible funding'. They have no prototype and you've 'lost' your money as soon as it's pledged. I steer well clear of these...

I like the look of the scale model with nearly identical keyboard as the original breadbin. I would likely order a unit if available for ordering.

However, I wouldn't put my money in a kickstarter that won't refund in case it fails.

2 big crowdfunding no-no's spotted right away:
1. No prototype
2. Flexible funding

It just seems like an ARM-based emulator machine anyway, plenty of those things around already.
