hi all,

i am currently debating as to which way display my growing collection of die cast miniature cars (1:43), i already know and am in the process of organising a display cabinet, that's not an issue.
what i have a dilemma with is, should i remove the cars from their packaging or leave them in? the packaging is nothing fancy like Matchbox for eg but its just a blister pack with a cardboard footing. there is practically no information on the packaging regarding given model, just the make\model, nothing else.
most of the information comes on included booklet with each model.

so, any collectors here that can share their views and opinions as to: should i remove each car from the blister pack or leave them in and display that way?

cheers,
Marcin

I (used) to collect Scalextric/slot-cars and still got loads of them. I only really packed them in their boxes (for the ones I have) to protect them and prevent excess dust. It depends if you are actually putting them in a cabinet and what your tastes are. If I had a closed cab then I would take them out of the boxes personally so they can be viewed better and not need to worry about alot of dust buildup but really there is no right or wrong way to display them. It's down to whatever you prefer...

If the packs are still sealed and these are vintage then whatever you do never open up the packs and take them out, and try to keep the cardboard backs as good condition as possible.

Removing the packaging will devalue the items hugely. I don't know exactly for your collection, but as an example in Star Wars collecting an original 70s Storm trooper still sealed in a near mint blister pack could be worth 600, whereas loose it is only worth 10!

For my Star Wars collection I display the sealed packs at the back of the cabinet or shelf, and then the loose figures on stands in front of them.

Depends... if you are a collector, their is nothing sadder than an item missing its box, or a figure not still attached to its blister pack and untouched. It is what us collectors dream about finding and owning.

I'm not a collector of these so don't have a definitive answer regarding them but my personal opinion is that no matter what you're collecting, if the box isn't tampered with, leave it be. Doesn't matter if it's worth 1p or £1M, leave the box as is.

I got a weird look from the Mrs for buying the Back To The Future Lego DeLorean and not opening it. She just didn't understand!

I'm the same with games sadly, if I got a hard to find game and it wasn't open, I'd probably buy another one that was in worse condition to use and keep the sealed one on display

I don't think I could have done that with Lego. That is one thing I would always buy to build. I still want to buy a Millennium Falcon at some point.

thank you guys :)
sadly the collection is not vintage\old...its current release from DeAgostini Poland and there are large numbers of issues per model.
The series is called "the cult cars of the eastern block" :)

the only thing that's stopping me opening the blister packs is the fact that possibly i have the only complete collection (and still going) here in Australia :) there are plenty in Poland but i don't believe any other Pole here in AU bothered to ship them ;)

what i think i will do i will check the size of the cabinet i intend to purchase and if its large enough in size i will leave the blisters on.

thanks again guys. :)

My kid loves to watch toy videos on youtube. I'm impressed with the number of collectors that just rips the toys out of the packing. Given every male kid in the western world probably owns one or more of this particular range of toys, one should think the value in the long run would be in the untouched ones.

Nothing sadder than a toy that never got played with...

Not to mention if it devalues another way e.g. sun bleaching or going yellow within the pack.

I think you should do whatever you feel like doing. Thing is, items rise in price for good reason, at that point they'l be rare and they'll be saught after!

There'll be a buzz about them when you talk to other enthusiasts that have been cut from the same cloth as you.

Would you be willing to part with your toys if they reached that status? This is how you need to think.

Prioritise them and consider each one individually.

That's certainly my sentiment. I really don't understand the human desire to keep things sealed in packaging like this. It makes no sense at all to me.
