diy arcade joystick mame/amiga

Hi all here is a work in progress only test mode

today i got myself a pair of arcade joysticks and buttons


i have taken 2 ps2 gamepads apart for the mame part and used a usb to ps2 adapter




the pad


so far used floppy ribbon cable for connecting together

the veroboard connector


the pad wired up


the back of the test joystick in shoebox lid


the top of joystick


the amiga side i will have a roboshift incorporated for port 2 so i can plug my mouse in too


i will be having 2 pads this way to have a duel joystick in a box

and will work for both the amiga and pc/ps2

this is the mockup stage and will update when further

it works fine in mame so far

any comments or sugestions would be appreciated

How are you connecting it to the Amiga? A PS/2 to Amiga converter of some kind?

(For bonus points, make the Amiga side of it CD32 compatible! )

My friend AtariJay and I are looking into making a propper full-on MAME machine - not sure if its gonna be an upright or cocktail cab.

I have some bits but would need more....

no i got them from ebay. I have been looking at various sites at designs of cabs will put some links up later. I wouldnt have the time 4 a full cab my self. Will look at a desktop tho

John, i was actually thinking of suggesting a bartop arcade build, but thought you wouldn't like the idea. Maybe you could fit a couple of machines in one, especially if you have a TFT monitor!

Yeah. I'm guessing it's still the same stick, but... I'm looking for a cheap stick for a build of my own, but i want some sort of opinion from someone with a grab and manhandle opportunity, so to speak. (Well, a few opinions really. So far it seams a bit like luck of the draw with sticks from DX, some say they are great, just the right firmness, not a lot of wiggling around, and others complain about uneven deadzone, and so on)

John, are you planning on covering this with something on top, like say, plexiglass, or PVC? If i may comment, the sticks don't need that square cut you made there. What's needed is a hole drilled slightly smaller in diameter than the black plastic discs surrounding the sticks, and the chassis is to be secured to the wood from underneath.

i still never got around to making my mame cabinet.
have everything but the buttons joystic wood coin slots and time lol..
(yeah i want coinslots, I hate shrapnel in my pocket so its a good piggy-bank)
Planning to use an amd 3000+ system with a reasonable gfx "3850" or better.
I have a ems topgun light gun for games like point blank.
And will use they keyboard for most functions like coin in p1 start rotate screen, other similar functions.
and then have a couple of mame based arcade sticks.
I already decided to use a crt tv instead of the very expensive arcade monitors. 26" should be fine. however im a structural engineer by training. so i can weld and fabricate from steel. And the tolarances of wood have never been something that interested me. im guessing that my main case is going to be pretty heavy as the only way i know to make it strong enough is to make a steel frame then bolt wood on to that.

my other problem is i cant draw to save my life. it seems as though you are quite accomplished.
So i will end-up using decals or something similar.

But unlike you. I may have plans to do it and have had them for a while. But it really dosent look like i am actualy ever going to make it.

So much respect.
putting it down on paper and thinking il do this is 1 thing. talking about it is yet a nother. but to actualy go ahead and start is something i respect.

Is looking very well, nice that all is looking aligned, I would think to unalign it a bit to give it a creative edge, but this is very well done.

Yup, looks nice, i just hope the "pichure" service comes back soon so we can have a closer look. For the time being i get an error:
