Do we need an Amiga buddy system?

I can honestly say, my wifey isn't bad to be fair. She has said on occasion that i have too many hobbies, but she has never told me to sell anything. I have sold items recently mostly due to new space restrictions, and when I do advertise any Amiga gear, she say's don't sell if you're "in two minds" and the only negative comment she has ever made was, "it's a lot of money for things to just sit and only used on occasion". I guess she don't see them as vintage collactables.

Wife acceptance factor is why i can barely have 3 Amiga installed and working at home instead of my full fleet of retrocomputers.
To save space my PC is only a NUC!
Wives like to control space.

Usually it is the abb. for Woman Acceptance Factor but sometimes woman is replaced with wife....
I'd like to introduce everyone to...that's right, MAF, no HAF about it! There's a new sheriff in town.

You don't need to explain the rules of it to women, just live it. :)

My wife and I were talking a few days ago, a bit morbidly, about what to do if either of us dies before the other, and eventually it came around to my Amiga gear. My wife does not have any interest in the Amiga and sees it as just old junk and plans to happily throw it all away in case of my death, this was quite alarming and got me thinking. For those of us who don't have children to inherit our Amiga gear, or live in another country, or do not know other Amiga users near by, what do we do? As we get older is it time to find an Amiga buddy who in the event of your death can contact your spouse and arrange looking after the Amiga? Should this perhaps be a list of that can be given to your spouse? I am just throwing out ideas but it seemed sad that when I die my Amiga stuff would just be thrown away.
That's a good idea. My wife is not technically minded at all, only 4 years ago she learned how to send text messages (she's 68). I asked her once to turn my PC on and she stripped off all her clothes and started dancing provocatively around it. My son loves tech but would list everything on eBay within a few days of my passing so all of my tech stuff is going to my best mate's son who loves retro etc. and he's someone who would cherish and take care of it all.

When (and if) I reach retirement age, every last scrap of my retro gear will be offered back to the community. I also have a stipulation written into my living will to the same effect.

Edit:

And yes, I seriously considered buying the following for my final journey but the wife wasn't impressed o_O

I'm having a Vikings funeral. My arse on a boat, pushed out to sea then people can shoot burning arrows at it.

Events earlier this year (with my health) has prompted both myself and my wife to look at not only wills, but also power of attorney. At the moment we have nothing in place. I'm okay now and hopefully should be for many years to come, but it was a bit of a wake up call that we need to get things in order just in case...

Something like our home is an easy one as we will pass this to our children, but we have so many other things to consider. If one of us goes first then hopefully the other will have a good idea what to do or who to contact to help sort out the others passion/hobby/collection. However we've also been considering what would happen if we were (god forbid) both wiped out in a car accident etc. With nothing in place our children would have no idea who to call or what to do to sort out so many aspects of our lives.

I hate getting older and it really does feel to me that over the last few years I'm suddenly starting to feel like life has slipped away, maybe wishing I'd done some things different. Especially the last 10+ years where it's all be about work, work and more work. Maybe my thought process hasn't been helped by my renewed Amiga and C64 passion over the last couple of years. I'm looking at all this amazing hardware which is 30-40 years old and thinking how things have changed since then and wondering what it could be like in 20 or 30 years time, only to then think I might not still be alive!

I'm 51 in November (which I know isn't old, but just seems crazy to me that I'm that age), but since my problems earlier this year I have made changes and have started to re-prioritise a few things. Unfortunately none of us know what's around the corner.

Okay, think I need a (small) drink...

Man, life is not slipping away, come on!
We are mostly in what we call in french "dans la force de l'âge", in our prime of man life if you prefer, which comes later than those of football or tennis players but is still not old.

There may be a a time distorsion here because we are spending time to do retrocomputing on same devices we had as teenagers. Even if 30 years have passed and our computers aged, we are still not old.
If necessary, rejuvenate a bit your gear with an ACILL mobo or Reamiga board, buy a brand new ZZ9000 and a just soldered Freeway USB board, and you will feel as young as your Amiga.

This is such a bummer of a subject.

It's true. As it is true with anything collectable and vintage. A huge part of the draw is nostalgia. Once that dies off, with it dies the collectable. True for old cars. True for retro computers. True for vintage audio hardware. True for old anything.

New generations won't care about it, because they have no connection, no life reference to it. For every 100 Amiga systems, 97 will probably just end up being dumped. What kid cares about this stuff today? It was a different time. We were part of the time when computers really came into their own, and Amiga pushed many of the liveability features forward in a big way. It could do things no other hardware could.

This is it. Right now. The top of the second echo nostalgia wave. The restoring. The retrobrighting. The recapping. The new accelerators. This is it. The top of the echo nostalgia wave. There won't be another wave this high...ever. It is higher than the one in mid 2000s, and higher than the one in mid 2010s. Next up, plenty of listings. flood on the market of Amiga hardware. "AMUGA computer. This was my dads. Don't know much about it. Powers on. Sold as-is. No returns."

They say we feel better after a sad song. I've just played it.
I am not sold on this comment's "nostalgia is the end" narrative. First off, if I came across an old Ferrari, I have NO nostalgia, but I would most certainly restore it to glory.... It would be worth a mint and amaze my friends. The nostalgia did create that originally but is no longer needed.

A lot of nostalgia for most, comes from the past personal experiance. There would be no nostalgia if you never owned the ferrari.

Exactly... but I would restore it and drive it around as a collector and if I didn't want to take the time I would sell it to someone who did because of it's collectors value.

Let's start with something cheerful and happy today! :)

I came across something called Swedish death cleaning, defined as “a method of organising and decluttering your home before you die to lessen the burden on your loved ones after you’ve passed”. It is usually practised “by older people or those battling a terminal illness”.

This is on the right lines, but I’m with Ronnie – I think the process needs to start earlier in life. When my time draws near, I certainly won’t want to be stressing out driving around trying to find a home for my West Bromwich Albion memorabilia.

So when do you start? Ronnie’s 47 and that sounds about the right age to me; high time to stop accumulating stuff, and instead start shedding what you have.

Aren't we humans funny? Spend primes of our lives collecting stuff, then spend the twilight years getting rid of it. HA!

It was George Carlin who had a a comedy bit about "Have you ever noticed how other people's stuff is s**t and your s**h is stuff?"

My grandfather before he died did his darnest to spend my father's inheritance, and filled his little house with shite. For example, all those Diana memorial plates you find in the back of the daily mail...? He got them... Charles and Diana plates? Got them too... Any commemorative tat, those coins made at the "royal mint"... yep, those too...

He died and both my parents squandered everything - any money, these new family heirlooms, everything with nothing to show for it in the end.

So, the moral of the story? I guess enjoy it while you can, don't expect anything from your kids, relatives et al as they won't appreciate it.

And ... you'll be dead.. Why would you care??

Still, if anyone wants to buy any Diana plates.....

@Karlosjackel

That's why I recently got rid / sold off almost 85% of my Amiga collection. Only kept a few prized machines and software.

You know, you beat everyone to it cashing in your Amiga shares at the top of the market.

After all...who will want to buy these things in the very near future? The young kids don't care. FPGA is...well, let's face it, pretty darn impressive. Retro Man Cave has all the inventory they need.

I predict a rapid price decrease on all things Amiga.

COMING SOON! SALE on ALL AMIGAs

50% off on all prices you saw back in 2002, and nearly all units now fully recapped! :)

Also...maybe that's why the Terrible Fire guy talked about stepping back, and soon. He looked at the forecast and decided to slash the roadmap, be proactive as his customers start subscribing to the Buddy System.

Look at me...I'm just a boxful of happiness today?

To cheer us all up, how about picking out the best Amiga game from list below for playthrough this weekend?

Astaroth: Angel of Death
Death Bringer
Death Knights of Krynn
Death Mask
Death or Glory
Death Trap
Deathbots
Life & Death
Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel
Pursuit to Death
White Death
Wings of Death

P.S. What if in Heaven Commodore never screwed up the Amiga, and it is there like Apple here, except not creepy? And there is no social media.

What is the Heaven Amiga like today? Can you even imagine AAAGAAA graphics? You arrive and they hand you the Amiga AIR Laptop? WOW. Motorola 69K 64-core for megamulti-multitasking, 17", 1.5lbs, 36hr battery, charged to 100% in 30 minutes, which doesn't matter because time stands still in Heaven.

Not everyone. I only have 2 retro machines, the A4000 & A1200. I have been thining out my collection for the past year or so, but not for the reasons shared in this topic. I recenlty moved into a smaller property and most of my stuff sat in storage waiting to be sold :-(

After all...who will want to buy these things in the very near future?

Many kids will not be interested, that much is true, but I disagree that prices will fall off in the near future. I think the prices will remain pretty much the same for a long time to come. I could very well be wrong, but I just don't see it.

I tend not to believe in heaven, but if there is such a place for us, I hope I can bring my retro Amiga's :)

Well time to crawl back into bed, night, night.

No heaven? How DARE you as you sit there with your A4000 and A1200 both featuring the trinity of Angel God Angel?

You listen to Belinda...really listen this time. :)

...then maybe also go watch San Junipero episode of Black Mirror.

I picked that one.
Thin of responses. Maybe it should be a poll, otherwise - your suggestion wins by virtue of being the only pick.

With Halloween coming, maybe we should have a favourite Amiga "Death" game poll featuring above list? How do I make such a poll post?

Whoa... wait... AAAGAAA graphics??? When??? 😁

I got a couple of them 69k chips from China... New old stock... :)
