Does AmigaOS 3.9 support secondary IDE channels natively?

Hi Guys,

Up to this point I've been using the demo version of IDEFix from Aminert to get my IDE buffer board working to use my CD-ROM on the secondary channel.

The constant popups reminding you it's only a demo version are now beginning to get on my nerves, and I read somewhere that IDEFix demo is only needed to do the install of OS3.9, and it can be removed once OS3.9 is installed.

IDEFix is really only needed to get the secondary channel working right? Don't CD-ROM drives work on the primary channel with no additions to the OS (2.0 and above)?

So, if that statement is right, how do I get the secondary channel to work with native OS3.9 files, rather than the demo of IDEFix?

If it's wrong.... is there anything else I can do?


On a second note, BB2 said it had a new ROM update which may be incompatible with some hardware, and after installing it my A1200 gets constant Gurus. Where is this file kept, and which is the most recent version before this (ie does BB1 have a ROM update, or is the ROM Update installed with OS3.9 from CD the one used up to BB2 install)?

There are another CD drives in Amiga land. The easier is IDEFix97, but it is commercial.

Sack it out, use another CD file system.

The A4000 IDE is buffered, and so it accept two devices at the same time with no fuss at all.

The one available in A600 & 1200 is not buffered, and people prefer to buy the IDE Express hardware and then use the IDEFix97 package.

Hmmm - Rkauer, I was going to buy the A4000 IDE device that allows two separate IDE channels (so that I can have two CF>IDE devices on IDE channel one and my CD on IDE channel 2) but Amigakit says that I need to use IDEFix? Is this incorrect for OS3.9 please?

For more than two devices you need a IDEfix board in your A4000, too.

I don't know if is possible to use two CF in the same IDE channel, using Idefix97 or not.

What I know is you can use a CF and a CD/DVD-ROM in the same channel. You need to experiment with one works better as master.

That thing you pointed out is just a passive IDE splitter, identical to the Aminet hack:RTFM:

For this hack you still need the IDEfix97 package. Be prepared to deal with that nag requester every now and then. IDEfix97/IDEMax is no longer registrable.

cf cards have the same lines then ide hard disks, that is exactly the reason why the cf to ide conversion boards are so cheap

I never managed to have a cf and my dvd ide player on the onboard ide on my A4000, but I must admit, not a bigbox user for long...

But original when I bought it it had a cdrom writer and old ide hard disk working, no idefix:roll:.

I remember digging up info about it and it has to do with standards and cdrom Anyhow the dvd rom as only device works for me.

tiffers: sounds like the usual CD-ROM adapter/IDEfix (non-Express; the one without the Gayle clipon) not being compatible with kick 3.1 on A1200. Or more specifically, V43 of scsi.device. IIRC, it worked fine with kick 3.0 in my A1200.

Second problem, the A1200 isn't like a PC; two devices in the first two IDE sockets must 'like each other' in order to work - using these two sockets with two cables is like using an IDE cable with two plugs.

Third problem: If you use the third socket, there will be no conflicts - but you need software to support it (I don't know if OS3.9 does so). This probably means that device won't be available on boot, unless the software installs a reset-patch. I don't think it does, but I don't know.

If you have the adapter linked to above, I think it works with the software for the regular (cheap) IDEfix adapter. Try calling an Amiga webshop like Amigakit and ask if they can help you.


If you want to have the CD available at boot-time, I think you will have to get a cable with two plugs (to get rid of the adapter) or at least upgrade scsi.device to a higher version. (As I said, I'm not 100% sure about this, and I certainly don't know how to upgrade scsi.device from the one in the Kickstart to make all devices available at boot time...)

I don't think putting the 3.0 roms back in is a good solution.

OS3.9 uses IDEfix97 to load the second device, either an ATAPI CD/DVD ROM (RW or not) and to activate a possible secondary IDE channel. The very same as the A1200 unit.

No need for: installing the IDEfix package will put a resident in memory who takes care of any removable device in the IDE chain.

I don't think putting the 3.0 roms back in is a good solution.
