Most people i talk to use either gotek setup or cf card / hard disk.

Do you ever use your Amiga floppy drive? if so what for? I'm curious :-)

I use it for the same reasons I did back in the 90s. :) Sure I have WHDload and all of that, but there's nothing quite like the real thing and booting a game off of a disk. It's also convenient for quick file transfers with a modern PC using CrossDOS etc if you're using an Amiga without USB or ethernet, etc. I also use floppies to boot C64 games, although I do use JiffyDOS with it.

I get it, i i switch my Amiga on and wait for that "I'm waiting for a disk noise :D"

I use the gotek to transfer files from the pc via usb (adf files) but the cf card does have WHDLoad but i've not used it yet.

I totally get it though. Thanks for replying.

There's nothing wrong with Gotek at all btw. I'm not one of those purists who say we have to stay in the past. :) Just that I enjoy that bit of nostalgia for some of the games that I played back in the day to relive that experience.

p.s. is it just me, or the same floppy drive on the same system definitely sounds different if you're running KS 1.3 vs, say, KS 3.1? Don't know if it's a difference in trackdisk.device or something else.

The reason i ask is that i am thinking of selling the Amiga :( and wasn't sure to include the floppy, cd rom, cf card and gotek. or 160gb ide hd, cdrom, gotek and cf card. as there is not enough space for all of them. So i thought i would ask peoples opinions on the floppy :)

I guess each person has their own tastes about that sort of thing.. but selling your Amiga should be the last resort! Maybe sell some of the accessories if you want but keep the Amiga itself?

I will have to go through all my old Amiga stuff and see what i got.

The 4000, i bought new when they first came out, then my dad had it off me years later. Sadly my dad passed away back in May 2020 so i inherited the Amiga back.

I've had fun getting it going (it needed a new keyboard membrane and i had to 3d print a floppy face for it ( i put it down somewhere in a box of his stuff and cant find it since grrr) and i've had a play with lots of old utils and stuff i loved. I used to be so good on them and now im trying to remember it all haha, i can't get over the speed of the cf card and the ease of use of the gotek. I love it.

So it's not final yet that its going but i am not sure i have time for it, and may prefer someone to use it rather than it sit there like the rest of my computers.

I use a floppy disks in case of emergency, if i have ruined my startup-sequence or anything like that, to boot with necessary tools. I sometimes also need to backup an old floppy disk to adf.
I have very few floppy drives still working perfect and i have been thinking of moving to gotek, but i have always thought that in order to fix an amiga software wise i need to be able to write a disk on a working amiga to use on the failing amiga. Obviously thats not true anymore but still the more convenient way.

I stopped using the Amiga around 1998 i think so when i got it back again (but with no hd in and no disks) i had to get everything again, i didnt want to pay £30 for workbench disks (as i did buy this new back in the day) so i opted for a cf card but without workbench (clever i know - or not). I then found out that i could not read the cf card on the pc or via WinUAE so i went and grabbed a gotek. (the floppy works, just had no disks apart from a diagnostic disk).

Now since i got the gotek it's so easy, i just put what i want on the usb in adf files and the gotek will mount / emulate it as a floppy. i use GoADF (that one kind member on here told me about) and i extract the lha or whatever then make ADF with GoADF so i can then use it as a floppy or put it on the cf card which is now dh0.

The next step if i don't sell it is to install a 160b (i think) ide hard drive and get the dvd drive or cd rom working.

so it was a bit of learning but i did fine with the pc / usb stick and the gotek (and the cf card as the hard drive on the Amiga)

I occasionally use mine to make Disks, for example I burned a set of 3.1.4 and 3.2 WB disks, just for completion I will never actually use them lol.

I used my floppy drive such as copies disk(other game) as someone point out that oringal game disk does worn out fast thought hence why I used copies(Blank disk) games :)

I found some disks with the Amiga in a disk wallet / folder thing and they didn't work. I am sure there are still 200+ in my mum shed from years ago :o will have to go see.

oh hey Xanxi, did you get another cat?

I haveca Gotek, but used it only one time. Amiga is not the same without floppy disks. Of course I use a harddisk for games like Indy IV.

I keep meaning to get an external gotek but never get round to it. I use floppy disks maybe 2-4 times a month, usually for transferring smaller files between Amigas. I also have DMS archives and I haven't found a better way to handle them. As my floppy drives all work I'm fine using them but if I ever had trouble I might get that gotek.

I only use DD disks though, even though my A4000 does HD.
