As some people know, one of my projects was to bring the current version of DosBox over to AGA 68k (nothing like a challenge and I managed ok with my ScummVM ports)

Unfortunately I discovered without some specialized ASM skills (which I lack) it would never be much use on real hardware because it's so friggen demanding

I did spend a few months working with Matt Hey trying to get an ASM 68k softcore working but we never quite got there unfortunately, read all about it here -> DosBox Core

Rather than simply throw away the 3+ months work that I spent porting and optimizing this port, I thought I might as well upload it to the Zone on EAB so people can see what could have been (using WinUAE).

It is compiled for 060 but seems to run ok if you sent WinUAE to 030 + FPU.

Oh well, can't win them all

Valiant effort :)

Thanks :)

A shame I couldn't manage it because it would have been good fun to play some classic PC games on my A1200.
I was only after emulating a high-end 386SX but the best I could do was a low-end 286 :censored:

It can still be useful as a simplier alternative to PCTask to run DOS programs. Why don't you post it on Aminet or here?

By the way, Cosmos might have the required 68k ASM skills. Why not contact him?

I don't really want to stick it on AmiNet because it's too slow but I've already upload it here -> EAB ZONE

It is quite useful for unpacked old DOS archives, that's a least one use :p

I spent ages begging ASM guys to help out on this cool project, Matt Hey was the only one to try and help. I can hack around a bit with ASM but this requires some who actually knows what they are doing.

I'll upload the full source code to AmiNet along with Matt Hey's WIP 68k ASM core in the vain hope that somebody will be able to finish it.

Yeah but not everyone is a member at EAB's.
Could you upload it on any other host service or at least on Amibay as attached file to your post?

I decided to just upload it to AmiNet (binary + full source code).

This is what it looks like running on my A1200 (sound disabled because it isn't pretty).

the fact it works at all is fantastic , how does it compare to the old PCtask thing?

in code it could emulate a 386 but at what speed i dont know..

It look like 256 Colours of Monkey island versions isnt it?

Yep it's the 256 color PC demo from way way back

This project is a bit of a sore point for me, with a talented ASM coder it could have been quite playable on an (overclocked) 060 and another nice little 68k application. Unfortunately most of those old-school ASM coders don't like helping out with any of my projects, it's like trying to milk cats

I can just about read ASM and know enough to get it to build, but I'm not an ASM coder by any stretch.

As it stands now it's pretty much unusable on real hardware :(
