Someone I work with asked me about Droidboxes and if it's worth them buying one.

Does anyone here use one? And what are your experiences of them?

I've played around with a couple a friend owns in the past, but not owned one myself. Running Android they are obviously a very versatile platform for media, but how good?

Reviews say they are fine for HD playback, but can't cope with 4K very well yet.

My fiend wants it to watch sports channels for free, which I understand works fine using a third party app, but I did warn him this might not work forever. Any info on this? Especially for Sky, BT and ESPN channels.

And finally what boxes would you recommend? I know many different ones exist ranging from £30 to over £100. The Droidbox T8 and others in its range look solidly made with metal cases. Are they good?

I might be tempted myself to get one just for media streaming. Maybe one to connect to a smaller non smart tv for my sons playroom.

My personal recomendation, especially as you state it's main use as media streaming, is to get a Raspberry Pi 3 which has built in wifi and bluetooth and install standalone Kodi on it.

Fast boot up, use blootooth keyboard, and watch and stream whatever you like...

:)

Personally I might get a Raspberry Pi 3 as I've been tempted anyway, but for my friend he really just wants an out the box solution like the Droidbox.

Iv got a firestick in the bedroom (ahem thank you) Got it in the sale for £25.00 sideload kodi on it and it has just about any tv program/ film you can think off. you can watch live tv through it but its not great quality. For sports use sportsmania, its about £1 pw for almost HD sport through firestick and has all the 3pm Kos on.

my next purchase will be the firetv which is more powerful but its only about £65.

the nvidia shields are supported to be really good

Firesticks are Ok until there's a firmware change, then you may need to flash it again. A Pi 3 with NOOBS on an SD card will allow you to add loads of different distros on it including Kodi, Retropie and Raspbian. I'd go with the Pi 3 all the way and forget about other Android boxes. I have a Beeline X2 and they were abandoned by the manufacturer, so there's no firmware updates for it.
