I am using a dvd rom reader in my A4000 for now, on the ide port, since I have a scsi disk, my ide dvd rom started working.. (it was mentioned by others then that it was a controller problem)

(there is a scsi cdrom coming by post)

is there a know bug, listing a huge directory tree in workbench that the machine is locking giving something like = suspend or reboot?

the ide dvdrom drive takes forever to list about 3077 dirs in workbench. and ends up with suspend or reboot option

This is caused by the Amiga running out of memory for just buffering the >3000 directories! Next time made less root directories.

A good cut point is less than 200 objects on each directory/drawer.

3077 directories? Why do you need that many? Even a current PC will take some time to actually read and open a CD fully with that number of directories on it. So imagine the trouble an Amiga with a lot less ram and a much slower CPU will have.

The one thing that used to annoy me with the Amiga was how slowly it opened a directory, with each of the folders lowly appearing inside the directory. Sometimes on an 030 power Amiga you could wait minutes for a full directory to open, and all the time watch the ram slowly eaten away.

Ha! On an '030 Amiga, I'm still drooling over how fast it is at opening directories! That's what years of using a 68000 with 2MB RAM will do to you. :-)

Even faster on an 040....whoops lets stop that now :p

The issue is that the directory cache is taken from ChipRAM and on a 1MB chip machine that run's out quicker too.

Again though why would you want so many files on a root directory!!

TC

It' s a huge archive, that I wanted to transfer. Well it's on dvd-rw so nothing lost.

On a linux system it takes about 10 seconds to display them, did not try in windows.

Will build up a directory structure and re-try it .

DVD-RW will also slow down the disc access compared to a DVD-R.

Did not know that dvd-rw is slower, but willing to believe since writing to cd-rws was always slower.

Just organised it from 1 to 10 and know it is ok. Display it in linux is not a problem, handling the files is more stressing to the donor.

Amigados is not a strong knowledge point, still learning the syntax. But devices are already in my head, know I am figuring how to mount the adfs without writing them. Yup was one of those put the flop in and play the game... And yes some mod stuff etc..

Did not figure how to go to volume cd that contain spaces, still looking to acess that one from dos... The microsoft dos I know how to, in linux there is autocomplete but in Amigados, still secrets..

If there's a space in the path/name, put quotes around the whole thing.

cd "Ram Disk:T"
