Hi everybody,
So as on the title I'm trying to setup a network on Windows for Workgroup without any luck. Windows is starting only when the network adapter is not started (/net start). I have an ethernet card based on a Realtek 3189D and I have also drivers for it. Anyway after installing them, then adding TCP/IP protocol setting up DHCP as a method of assigning IP as well as adding DNS and Gateway when trying to start Windows I receive a EMM386 exeception fault. Are the drivers scr****? As I remember well I do not have to install DOS TCP stack on DOS? :double
Any help is welcome

Do you mean RTL8139D?

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 does not normally require DOS device drivers for networking.

I found this driver for WfW 3.11 and your card: http://www.claunia.com/qemu/drivers/wfw_8139.zip

The first thing to try is disabling EMM386 by REMing its line out in config.sys and seeing what happens when you try and start Windows (don't remove himem.sys, it is required). You don't actually need it to run Windows and tends to cause more problems than it solves. If you need upper memory blocks to load DOS device drivers high and free up conventional memory, install UMBPCI if you have a supported chip set: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/umbpci_e.html

Hi,
So I managed to make at least Windows 95 to work with this adapter. The drivers on realtek site was a non go even on windows 95. I found another set of drivers on, if I remember, well in softpedia. Those installed without a problem and I could connect to the network (unfortunately in this driver set there's no windows 3.11 drivers). I will go back maybe this weekend to Windows 3.11 and I will try with the drivers that you linked.
Anyway thank you for your help. I will come back if I encounter more problems.

Check the IP range of your router with a DHCP machine (I bet you are trying using your router to connect your ancient machine to 'net) and check the IP your "normal" pc is using.

Then use a fixed IP for your ancient machne by using xx.xxx.xxx.29 (any other number but the 00 to 09 and 90 to 99 range will do) in the machine's IPconfig or the like, same mask, same gateway, same submask.

Prepare to dismay seen how few internet addresses still works on ancient computers.

Aminet will work, but you will see no much use in the contents. ;-)

All of this was done. In windows 95 the drivers on Realtek site gave on device manager an error related to an invalid for this card driver. The other ones installed without a problem and I was able to set network connection as DHCP and I can browse and even display the local area network. So I'm supposing the drivers on Realtek site for windows 3.11 are also f**** up. After installing them on Windows 3.11 I'm not even able to get to GUI. Windows is crashing while loading. I will try Win 3.11 the driver that NJRoadfan linked to. Maybe this one will work.
