I'm really a bit confused with this.

Ok, England is England.

United Kingdom is only England too? Or Wales and Scotland (I don't know if Ireland-EIRE is too).

Great Britain I pressume is England, Wales, Scotland right?

England is England the country not including Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland refers to The United Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wales is a Principality and considered a part of England under this title.

Great Britain refers to the Island of the British Isles, which is the Island containing England, Scotland and Wales.

Hope that helps

Great Britain is the main Island - so encompasses England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdon then adds Northern Ireland to the above

Some people incorrectly refer to England as being the whole of the UK, Americans often do this. Then some people don't even think much exists outside of London!

...Some people incorrectly refer to England as being the whole of the UK, Americans often do this....

We often got this when our American NATO allies visited us in Kinloss
(northern Scotland). They would jokingly claim to not be able to tell the difference between the accents of our groups, being from all over the UK.
Generally there would always be some Scousers, Brummies, Jocks, Boyos, Cockneys and the odd Swampy.
We would counter this by asking them which part of Toronto they were from.
:D

Interestingly, of all the places I have visited the only place I have come across with a consistent national accent across the whole continent, is Australia.

Thanks everybody. :)

You say that, as tho any of those answers made the issue clearer?
:blink::(:blink:

When you first asked, we had England, The UK, and Great Britain.

Now, you have those, AND:
The United Kingdom of Great Britain
The United Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland
The British Isles

And this is clearer how exactly? :o:unsure:

It's kind of like Soccer.
In the US, we have Football and Soccer, two different sports.
And we're told, it's Football in England! Don't call it Soccer! It's Football!

Ok, great. Then I'm looking at some games and I find a popular English game called Sensible World of Soccer??? :wooha::wooha::wooha:

So, you have been calling it soccer all along and the whole "It's Football, not Soccer" thing was just to bug us Americans??
(Not that I'd blame you.. We do deserve it...)

desiv:nuts::nuts:

p.s. OK, I just needed a break as my BASH scripting is getting rather complicated... Thanx.. Back to BASH...

it is football, we invented it and how can your game be called football when the players use their hands? your football is closer to rugby.

and I'm Welsh and British not English :p

If you were to ask my father, who was in the Army for years, he would say that we are the USS Great Britain, America's largest aircraft carrier that doesn't sail anywhere.....

Royaume Uni - dix points!!

And then you have the Commonwealth of Nations aka 'the commonwealth' aka 'british commonwealth'...

What can we say? Empires...

I think these days most folk think of England as England; Scotland as Scotland and so on (although yes there are people out there who don't realise that these are countries in their own right) but in general however correct or incorrect Great Britain and The United Kingdom (the UK) is essentially Scotland, England, Northern Irelend and Wales.

Fortunately the British Isles survived the ravages of the Danish-Norway Colonial Empire.
Thank you for returning the Shetland's and Orkney's to their rightful owners. :p

Haha, well. Norway was to that union what Scotland is to the UK, or the UK today is to the US ;-P

Norways foreign policy has been limited to rape and pillage, and later peace prizes to former and current presidents of the USofA.

In my opinion, I prefer the term "football" if I want to describe exactly what it is. "Soccer" I think is the American varation of football, because football for Americans is the well-known rugby.

And lets not get started on how scared of being hurt American's must be, with all that padding, body armour and helmets. Look at Rugby to see how real men actually play the game the American's copied. Hardly any protection, and lots of blood and broken body parts. Put an American Football player in a Rugby match and they would be running away crying!
