Following on from my 'How hard do you like games to be' thread, time for a rant.

Cannon Fodder - seriously, why did they make it SO damn impossible? It is possibly the hardest, most unfair game I have ever played. It's such a shame because the concept is genius, and the first 6 or so missions are a joy to play, but after that the learning curve is just ridiculous. I just wasted 50 soldiers over the course of nearly an hour trying to complete ONE single phase. Almost every time I got down to one or two of their little soldiers left, yet despite having heat seeking missiles they manage to get close enough to kill me with one poxy bullet, no matter where I try and hide. I'm not even mid way through the game and it's taking 10+ tries to do each phase, sorry but that is just stupid programming.

Sorry to say but that is probably the last time I'm going to play it, apart from starting again to do the easy levels again. A game should be challenging, but it shouldn't make you want to throw the computer out the window. What a waste of a great game, I've only got to play 8 of the 24 missions.

Phew, rant over.

i do find that playing the game from the very begining does give you a heads up on the gameplay and bit of forsight, although you need a bit of patients for these games.

I've been playing it since 1994, and mission 8 is the farthest I have eve got. I think anyone's patience would wear thin in 19 years :)

what i usually do in this point, is that i find a trainer version of the game and kick some serious butt. go duke nukem on the game so to say :)

..better not try CF2 then... ;)

I agree... I never finished CF2 and still can't be bothered going through it again these days (as much as i like the Cannon Fodder games).

I always got stuck on one of the skidu levels due to poor UI (my excuse at least).

Cannon Fodder 2 sounded awesome but in reality wasn't anywhere near as fun (!) ahaha!

Cannon Fodder: Never has a game annoyed me so badly

As a teenager i was so cross with it i threw the game box across the room and it became impaled on the back of darts in a dart board :o :picard

I think that was level 6 or 7 :)

I don't play it these days

Glad I'm not the only one, I was expecting a whole load of "I finished it on my first go!" type posts

I have only played the first couple of missions on CF2. I tried playing that 'New Missions' fan made version and I can't even get past the first mission on that

TBH, I thought it was just me being a bit rubbish at games especially as the first few levels are so easy.
Glad I'm not the only one.

I played 2 before 1 but they are both ridiculous further in. 2 just goes too far in the difficulty stakes, I just play from the start til I get bored of being stuck and i've usually had my fill of the game by then anyway.

Still, it's one of he games (along with Lemmings and Sensible Soccer) that defined the Amiga!

Aye cannon fodder is nuts. On my most recent attempt I got a bit further than level 8, can't recall exactly without loading up my save, which I'm not ready to do, (the horror). I've read a few people saying how they completed it so I'm thinking the difficulty probably levels off, doesn't help much when every phase costs you half your men.

I've been having a crack at it ever few years since it came out too but like a lot of games, I fear that what is needed is the forbidden combo of adult patience and teenage reflexes.

Damn, reading all this makes me wanna try it right now. I don't have it for Amiga but is it safe to assume that the PC version is the same?

Edit: Ah crap. The one i have is Cannon Fodder 2...

CF1 is a great game and i had it on CD32. It has a nice learning curve. CF2 on the other hand just throws you in the thick of it and hands your bum to you.

Been playing this for a couple of weeks, up to mission 7 and it's already super-hard. This game's difficulty level is out of whack, but it is easier than CF2 which I bought for peanuts years ago and barely played.

They guys with the rocket launchers in CF get me every fooking time! Especially in later levels. They shoot from off the screen, so you forget they're there until half your squad look like tomato soup splodges.

Never passed mission 10, myself. But the game is still pure fun.

I find that a lot of retro games are a lot harder than games of today, I always put it down to the lack of memory/storage space they had in those days, they had to make games harder to make them last longer to make up for less content.

Having just said that it also amazes me how some games like Lemmings for example manage to fit 120 levels into 2 floppy disks! I realise That I have kind of contradicted myself a bit here
