F****ing Cannon Fodder

Cannon Fodder was one of the games I was most looking forward to playing again when I dug my A600 out of the loft last year. Alas, I haven’t played it since last year for I too am stuck at around mission eight, having sacrificed about 50 brave pixelated warriors trying to get past one single phase.

After a while, the frustration levels were so great that I found myself in danger of taking a lump hammer to my little A600, so I decided I’d best switch it off and rekindle my affections for Alien Breed and Sensible Soccer instead. Far more satisfying…

Don't have to wait to build an Amiga to 'enjoy' this one again. It's been available on GOG for years...

It seems I'm not alone in love-hating this game :D

If you ask me, Alien Breed is just as frustrating and impossible as CF! :wooha:

I was contemplating keeping my copy to play - but having read all of these I think it's better off in the "things to let go of" pile - I don't think I want to risk the stroke! ;-)

Are there any other games like this that you remember ?

I do have fond memories of playing Z - in abusive mode that game would sling all kinds of insults at you once you were losing - sometimes it was funny, sometimes it could get your hackles up, if you were engrossed enough ;-)

I'm getting a real urge to play it again today, just because it ****ed me off so much yesterday

I wouldn't mind so much if you could save after each phase. But I need to complete 2 nigh-on-impossible phases to get back to the impossible one :(

Damn! You guys are forcing me to find my old save disks and check, where did I finished :)

eight sound very familiar to me, i don't have to check.

however, i'll revisit the first seven missions one day soon. they rock. just as much as the mountain you hit at the eight one.

I'm now on mission eight. The accuracy of the enemy soldiers has increased massively. They ploughed through 50 recruits in no time. Very hard this, and I thought 7 was hard! How wrong was I!

YEAH!!!! Finally managed to finish mission 8 today. Phase 3 is by far the hardest, yet again I wasted a good 30 or so soldiers on that phase right at the end. Killing all the little b******s hiding in between the 5 huts is a real challenge, grenades and rocket launchers are no help. Phase 4 is good fun and not too hard, took about 4 attempts.

I think 4 phases in between saves on missions that hard is a bit unfair. Looking forward to mission 9 which 'only' has 2 phases :)

Has anybody ever developed a 'save state' add on for WHDLoad? Not sure if it would be possible? It would be very handy.

I curse the moment I noticed this thread! I’m currently risking a seizure by once more bravely engaging in combat with Mission Eight. And as always, the game is giving me a sound thrashing.

After writing that, I went back and played Alien Breed again: yep, that's frustrating as hell too. It's actually Alien Breed II that I find the most satisfying iteration of the franchise...

I hate Rocket armys man as that what you got watched out for:wooha:

The thing is, Cannon Fodder is basically a memory game. Only by playing it a ridiculous amount of times (and failing ), you can figure out where all the enemies are and win the levels by preemptively shooting them.

Pretty bad game design, but I love it anyway :D

Finished CF1/CF2 back in the day, they're relatively easy but do require patience and luck (!). I played them that much they became second nature to me! :D

Cannon Fodder New Campaign (2008 ) is a LOT more difficult than the original games however.

You're right that you need to know where the enemy are (snipers especially) but what the enemy do is different every time you play a phase.

Well done on mission 8, I think my personal best is about mission 10.
You're doing very well to still have Jools & Jops still alive :)

Sounds exactly like the sort of game I'd hate. I'll be sure to give it a miss.

I don't think I've made it past level 8 either but all this Cannon Fodder talk has given me a reason to give it another go (off for some retro game time)
