There is a lot of software out there for Windows and most of it people buy or download with a crack and use, but is this really a must. What I mean to say is there is so much great software out there that's free and its just as good if not better than the software you have to buy.
I know you have to buy Windows and its one of those evils. I also know you can download it but then you have to mess about with cracks and such and it can break the OS. So I went on eBay and bought a cheap Windows 7 Home Edition as i use it mostly for games anyway.
Once I did that I was looking around and saw of the prices for programs I needed and thought why so expensive ?
Now I also have a Linux distro on my computer and I have never bought any software for it. I have made a few donations to the people who made it but not bought anything and yet I love the apps I have on it. It made me think did Windows have this too ?
Oh yes if you look on Google and other sites like Open Source you will see loads. I also looked up apps I use in Linux and there were Windows versions.
Take Microsoft Open Office which is a great package for everything you need in your day to day life, but if you wanted something free how about trying Open Office or Libre Office. They do the same thing and you keep your money in your pocket.
I use a lot of free software on my computer so here is a list on what I use.
Firefox - To me this is THE web browser to have. Its by far better than anything Microsoft has come up with since Windows.
Pidgin - Even though you can download MSN Messenger for free I find that its very limited and I had to use other chat apps for other places. Not with this program though because it has a vast array of option to log on to your favorite servers.
Binreader - As I use Usenet I need a good NZB downloader and I find Binreader one of the best. Not only does it repair the files if needed, but it will extract as well so you dont need to do much.
VLC Media Player - Windows Media Player is great but I find it a pain in the ass if you play a format that it don’t know. VLC has loads of codecs and from what i have seen when using the app it runs anything i throw at it.
DVD Styler - A great app to convert video’s or pictures to DVD and make your own menus too.
Imgburn - If you want to burn isos, make isos or even make data discs this is the program you should be using.
Abiword - I love this because I don't need a full office package and I keep all the functions from programs like Word in this. It has everything you could ever need.
Gimp - This is a great package for images or making them. It has so many tools and you can add more on to it. Its worth you time learning it and really getting to grips with it believe me.
7Zip - Compressing and extracting data to your computer is always a must and this program is one of the best I reckon.
Rocket Dock - If you need a Mac style doc on your desktop look no further. Its free and very easy to customize.
Quick Par - This program checks your downloads to see if they need repair. If they do and you have enough of the par files it will repair your download.
Well that's what I use apart from the free emulators, but i wont get into that as I use a lot of those on my PC.
