OS 3.9 uses to much chip mem and is slow, even on my 060 setup.
I have gone back to workbench 3.1 and its as fast as rocket and I have more than enough chip mem. ( 2048 Kb free ).
Does not look as good as far as icons but without PPC I found OS 3.9 was a snail and greedy.

Thanks all.

I hear you

I hear you

I hear what you are saying. I have moved back to 3.1 on several of my set-ups. You can have lots of fun trying to squeeze a little more out of 3.1. Beware of some of the packages to update it. They become a bit too much and can tend to start dragging it down.

Really? Although I agree 3.1 is blistering on my 060, I find 3.9 plenty quick enough?

I never had speed problems with AmigaOS 3.9 when I used it in the past.

i very much doubt you have 2048kb of free chipram even on 3.1,that would be all of it.

A real nice video card is very important to getting good mileage from 3.9, even more so than an 060...

Guess it depends what you use it for. I run cwb 3.9 on a desktop aga for a bit of whdload and messing around with novas ports and netsurf etc. I consider the performance fine. Each to his own though. I am sure I even ran it on a blizzard 1230 and considered it good enough, although that was a while ago.

I have 1857,400 chip free after a clean boot of os3.1 and 1825,192 after booting os3.9. os3.9 offers me lots of new features so i prefer os3.9.

I'm running the same screenmode on both systems btw.

The issue is that Amiga graphics no matter how much you tweak your system is dirt slow compared to a good cv64 or p4.A stock 3000 with a cv64 has better performance gain than ecs on an 060.It will also fix the chip ram issues.

I use CWB3.9 on my 1200 with 030-33MHz and the speed seems fine to me, and I also have ~1.8MB free chip even though it is running 1024x768. It is more or less the same speed I had with my 3.1 setup, after it had added some of the features that are already included in 3.9. So I see no reason to go back to 3.1.

I put back my OS3.9 CF card and had another look for the problem.
I downloaded another 68060.library and it has fixed the slowness problem.
Is it possible I had an old or corrupt 68060.library ?
sysinfo still reported 39 MIPS but everything else was slow, for example drawing icons and scummvm was jerky and slow.
I deleted the CPU libraries and added new ones ( not from blizzard install disk ). and its fine now.
Still, it would be nice to have more graphics mem, its 1,886 now with extreme high res.
problem is, some demos require over 2MB graphics mem (chip mem) to run.
I have also loaded my icons into other memory.
Any other tips on how to load more into fast mem instead of using a low color, resolution screen mode to get more ?

Thanks.

OS3.9 can be really quick and fast, but it needs a bit of tuning.
My A600 with an 030 is blazing fast with ClassicWB 3.9 but with MagicWB iconset @ 8 colors as ECS and 16+colors is not fun.

I run OS 3.9 on my A3000 with Mercury 040 @ 35MHz. Runs real smooth.

I had a bit of a problem because the accelerator would disable the 040 when the machine was left unused for a few weeks. I then remebered the Mercury will systematically use the 040 on a 16MHz A3000 so I set the jumpers on the MoBo for 16Mhz config and now I always boot in 040.

I can't live without the extra features of OS 3.9.
