So after 10 years of ebay (mostly as a buyer) I am closing my account there

I have generally enjoyed ebay & for the most part its been hassle free, but over the past 3 months ive had nothing but trouble.

I bought a console that didnt work, I contacted the seller who told me he would not accept returns because I could have swapped the console for another one (basically called me a liar) even though I pointed out the serial number matched the box he sent it in!
(in the end I fixed it myself, at my expense!)
I listed a load of stuff for sale on 10 day listings, I was contacted by someone asking for combined postage discount, he then bought 5 items & didnt pay, when I contacted him he informed me he had no money :picard
I bought some fishing bait, when it arrived someone had opened the packet & removed half of the contents.
I bought 2 controllers from a seller, who only sent one, then I had to jump thru hoops & send photos of the packaging to prove I wasnt lying.
I have had numerous items "vanish" in the post
& only last week, I won an xbox 360 game for £1.99, only to be contacted by the seller to inform me it has become "damaged" & he couldnt send it.
He then refunded me by e-cheque  & then it bounced!

& dont get me started on the postage, maximum P&P for a computer game is £3! even though I always send recorded delivery, it makes no difference, so by the time youve packed it "properly" & posted it, you are already out of pocket.

So, lately all I have been doing is opening cases & waiting for refunds to clear.
Every case has to wait 7 days for a sellers response & half the time they dont even bother responding!
Its a joke, life is too short for this, im so tired of it.

So, goodbye evilbay! im done

Good thing we have other options then, eh? :D

When its good its good, when its bad...its fcuking terrible!

As above, at least there are other options!

yeah, i know what you mean,i dont really use it that much now but not because of mistakes made by sellers and whatnot.i can accept that and they are mostly fixable through messages.

yep, some sellers on ebay do know there selling broken items as working,or dont even send out items for all sorts of reasons.ive had that myself.
and either had to fix it(not really a problem as such most of the time) or get a refund or both.even if it is in a minority.
and can put off peaple using it due to having a few problems in a row.

but,you know where this thread is leading dont you.

I disagree. People are rubbish. ebay just tries to cope :p

We are living in a world of thieves at the moment. Not by choice but purely by compulsion and folks are skint and are stooping to rather low methods of conducting themselves which the system not only condones but encourages by placing the onus on those who have been done wrong by to prove their grievance.

Due to the power of large corporations and advertising however, there appears to be no viable competition for the monolithic behemoths. That is until the equivalent of a David appears on the scene and we see what these Goliaths are really made of...

You definitely seem to of had your share of bad luck with trades. The saying holds true on eBay "if it looks too good to be true then it probably is!". Long gone are the early days of eBay where you really could grab a bargain because nothing like it existed online and often people would list sales without knowing the value of something. These days you really need to be careful as so many are wise to easy exploits and scams, especially for sellers overseas.

As someone posted, it isn't eBay that is at fault, but rather some untrustworthy sellers ruining it for everyone else. Just as we have had a few of our own here on Amibay, you will get some where ever you go. The difference is that Amibay's staff will go the extra mile to resolve any trading issues between members as best we can to ensure both seller and buyer are happy.

However, I would just like to say that I've been using eBay since it began and it still has a place for certain things. I find it useful for smaller items like cables. You can pick up USB and network cables at a great price that shops really can't compete with. You can also obtain some items on eBay that you just can't source anywhere else. An example is a cable I needed for my Peugeot 407. It was a RT4 audio cable to add a USB socket to the car. Due to the proprietary connector on the RT4 it was hard to source, but I got one at a reasonable price from a French seller, so it was very useful for that.

I've had my fair share of issues with bad trades on eBay, but as long as you pay through Paypal you are fairly well protected, and this is identical on Amibay. Their dispute system is tediously slow, but it works most of the time. I've even had to utilise it for a trade here in the past and it do eventually achieve its result and get my money back.

You just have to be careful.

Been a member of ebay for 12 years, never had one problem.
All I can say is do you research on a user before buying, never steered me wrong.

You have been very lucky then.

I think it depends what you are using eBay for. In the past I did a lot of Vintage Star Wars collecting on there, and also a lot of importing of games never released here, plus loads of other things over the years. When you have a lot of activity the chances of some sales going wrong increases a lot.

Wow!

Despite all my best efforts, AmiBay still ends up being the eBay complaints department.

Your issues aren't unique. Why do you think we created AmiBay in the first place?

Well, I guess that Staffbay are in the same boat, and anyone living in Herne Bay, Morcambe Bay, San Francisco Bay, Summer Bay etc. had better start looking over their shoulders...

There are actually places called AmiBay...

I understand this issue well and see your point, it's maybe the biggest misunderstanding on the official 'List of misunderstood understandings of the Amibay Forum' Amibay actually lends itself to the 'A broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward' meaning of the word Bay - attempting to paint you 'the user' a nice picture of serenity and retro gaming in which we all live in this so called Amiga Bay, trading and living in harmony and not breaking the forum rules.... Haha! maybe not.

i hate Feebay too. I do feel bad for the mod's having to remind folks about the eBay thing but it's still a big part of our lives.

Well, the staff on here can't be expected to mitigate for stupidity, although generally, the error of their ways will be pointed out to the persons in question...

As Einstein said:-
"Two things are infinite; the Universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the Universe".

Been using ebay since 2000 , buying, selling - all 100% rating - what i hate the most when i pay right away for an item, and it gets here 2 weeks later--- it used to be even worse. It got better. I agree many times I sold something and the guy never paid for it...which is very annoying.
