PeBo here, hailing from Toronto, Canada.
Started my vintage tech journey, when today's vintage was still bleeding edge and Depeche Mode's « Construction Time Again » was one of my favourite album (still is)).
It all started with a Magnavox Odyssey 2. Managed to build quite a library before Philips pulled the plug... Gave away the whole kit 'n kaboodle to the neighbours kids (hindsight is 20/20)
Next up was my first computer love, my TI-99/4A. "This is the one" that got me hooked for good!
As (bad) luck would have it, like the Odyssey 2 before it, the 4A became an orphan, and not living in the US, software availability dried up mighty quick. The TI continues to hold the top spot as my favourite computer, but one always remembers their first love.
I reluctantly moved on...
All my friends had Atari 800's at the time, so that became my next system. Surprisingly, I only used it for games for a month or two. The reason, was my new favourite passtime - operating a local BBS (a moderately successful one to boot) called "The Late Show".
One night, I accidentally erased my main BBS disk (after intentionally erasing my back-up). I'm sure there are folks out there who can relate to my state of mind when it happened (yes, a grown man cried), but the end result was I stopped even turning the blasted machine on for over a month.
Which gave me just enough time to do my research on acquiring a fancy new 68000 machine. For a variety of reason's (and Atari friends) I settled on a 520ST
520ST, then 1040STfm then 1040STe (and a trip to the local Apple supplier to purchase 4GB to pop in). I stated that the TI was my favourite computer, but my later Atari's come in a very close second! Unfortunately the last time I moved, it was all simply too much to continue lugging around. By then my attention was on my shiny new Voodoo equipped Windows 95 machine, so family and friends split the spoils of my Atari ST. What became of everything now is anyone's guess.
Over 3 decades after the story started, I am once again building a TI-99/4A collection (just 4 carts away from having the full TI-released Library - Cha-ching!)
And now that I have the 4A where I want it (or where I wanted it 35 years ago), it's time to rekindle my ST flame, so I thought I'd check out all you fine folks at AmiBay, and keep my eyes peeled for a MegaSTe (the system I always dreamed of in my 1040 days). This seems to be the place to be if I hope to someday find a perfect balance of what, where and how much.
Time will tell.
