My Trusty Old Citrion C5 is now in the great scrapyard in the sky..

Faults where :-

Torsion suspension had snapped. (Yup you could he it clunk)
3 Ball joints knackered
Middle Hydraulic sphere underneath leaking fluid,
Exhaust needed replacing
Tyres needed replacing
Also back end wheels had done this " / - \ "

DPF, Kept popping up after a blast down the motorway every week.

Bought a new car so now skint lol!!

The joys of motoring eh lol

How old was your C5? The parts don't sound overtly expensive to replace, save for the exhaust perhaps.
 
Torsion bars don't usually snap the bearings go and that causes the wheels to lean inwards at the top. Clunks are often the droplinks for the anti roll bar.. Dpf could of been gutted and a remap done. Could of all been fixed but depends on if it was worth it.
 
Is anybody else still of the mindset that a 2001 car is fairly recent, hard to believe it's 14 years ago! In 2001 a 14 year old car would be a Ford Orion :)
 
Exactly, would have cost about 700 to have it all put right, 165000 miles on the clock.. car was only worth 500.

And to be fair i could have spent that on it then something else, not worth it..

But hey hum got a newer car so not too fussed, not one of these people that have to polish it every week (Only my Amiga lol)
 
We have 2003 Skoda Octavia with 205k on the clock, and a 2002 Peugeot 406 with 90k on the clock, - they have been really good but both of them are heading towards that fateful day when the cost of repairing an older car no longer equates to what its worth to you after the repairs.
I am expecting at least one of them to need replacing in the next year or two.
If only they were like Amigas.

Mind you, not sure how keen i am on the idea of a car made by Commodore......

I'm still in the mindset that 1997 isn't bad! My second car was '97 (Civic), next was a '96, next were 96/97/98 and now this one is a '98. The age has just hit me tho because now I have a horrid crunching noise from the front going over speedbumps, one front and one rear shock leaking, breaks are squealing (just bought new ones), cambelt is fine but never changed any other belt done, rocker cover leaking a bit, and possibly intake manifold gasket leaking air in! Breeeath... I'm not really in the mood now Im older to spend a fortune on it either.
 
lol hence i dont mind spending a grand on a car for 3-4 years,, still cheaper then buying a new one out right
 
In the last 4 weeks I had to replace the alternator, the gear linkage and buy a new tyre for my 9 year old van. That cost about 1/6th of what the van is worth, but to me at least I only spent £350 and I know the good and bad points of this van. It's way better than shelling out £3000 for a newer van and playing roulette as to what problems you are buying along with it. When people say it's not worth spending £700 on a car worth £500, you have to weigh up how much a new used car would cost you and what could go wrong with that the next day. If you've had you vehicle for years and have looked after it and know it's in good working order (besides the bits that need repairing), it's well worth paying to have it fixed if you ask me.
 
I quite agree. If you are keeping a car and don't plan on changing it then it's value isn't important. . Unless it gets written off, then you lose a lot.

I owned a '98 Peugeot 406 for 10 years and spent a fair bit on it, with 156k miles on the clock, and other than the clutch needing adjusting it was nearly as good as the day I bought it with 35k. And the 405 before it reached 135k before I sold it. I only Change cars when they get so dated I want a newer car with better feature.

My Nissan Almera is from 1998... It's age doesn't forgive and I've already made +392K (KM) with it. I know it's time to let it go, but right now a car isn't a priority. I hope to keep it for at least one more year.
