A *very* long time ago (back in my teens, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) I had a Hondo II SG, a Japanese copy of a Gibson SG (Special Guitar). This was about the time of what was called 'The Lawsuit Years', where Gibson were out busy suing anyone making replicas of their guitars.

I sold the Hondo II when I got married, as we needed stuff like furniture, a cooker, fridge etc. to set up our first home. Selling that guitar and my rock record collection was a wrench and it hurt, but it was necessary.

Fast forward to more recently and I got attracted to Stratocasters. I have a cheap and nasty KCS Strat and a Squier Affinity Series Strat that plays like a dream. Last Christmas my son Ian's housemate Paddy stunned me by giving me a late '80s Sunn Mustang 'Made by Fender' as a Christmas present. Along with my Fender Dreadnought, I was firmly in the Fender camp apart, from the Stagg XB300 'Warlock style' bass guitar that I picked up for some loose change.

Anyhoo, I got some bonus money in my wages this month and I saw an Epiphone SG400 on Gumtree in satin cherry finish that was calling out to me seductively, like the Sirens used to call sailors onto the rocks. It wasn't expensive (I have to watch the price driving comments here) as it wasn't set up properly and hadn't really been played that much, the seller just wanted it gone. OK, it's not a full-blown Gibson, but it's got Angus Young written all over it and with a set neck instead of a bolt-on neck, the sustain and midrange are so much better. Highway to Hell sounds ace with the overdrive on the amp turned up a tad. I love it.

Having sampled the Epiphone side of the Force, I found another Epiphone today online, in a branch of Cash Converters near to Manchester and the price being asked for it was too good to miss, as it had two strings missing, leading it to being discounted. I pounced and I didn't even have to go to the shop and wipe my feet on the way out, a definite bonus. I am now waiting for my Epiphone Les Paul Special II in sunburst finish to arrive later this week.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I have few vices apart from guitars and retro computers, so I've let rip with the guitar collecting and now I have a varied selection of good mid-range guitars from both camps without breaking the bank.

I am happy and shredding away to my heart's content. I think the guitar playing is actually helping my frozen shoulder recover a bit. Once I've had the steroid injection in my right shoulder, I'll be unstoppable.

Can't beat the versatility and feel of a proper USA Strat, especially if you want that Gilmour sound like me. Though the SSL-1 pickups help alot to achieve the right effect.

I'm more of a rhythm guitarist than a lead, Chris, so my playing style tends to gravitate towards stuff like Sabbath, AC/DC and dare i say it, Status Quo. Barre chords and chugging rhythms are the order of the day.

To balance the 'Chainsaws at Dawn', I do play a lot of '50s rock and roll, stuff like the Beatles early years, Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry. '60s stuff like The Animals, The Move, The Kinks, etc. also get an outing.

When my dad retired, he began making guitars from scratch. He's built four Strat clones and a few others to this date. Attached is the SG clone he made for me.

I've always prefered Fenders. Strats, Squire strats, Telecasters', Jazzmasters although I do have a Washburn with locking trem and wide neck. Never liked Gibo's

There's just something about the SG for me.

Do you mean in a Tommy Iommi, Angus Young, Frank Marino, George Harrison, Pete Townshend or Eric Clapton way..? The SG has a certain rock sound that a Fender can't quite emulate. When the strings need replacing on my Epiphone I'll throw a set of Ernie Ball Power Slinkies on it to add some more punch.

When the Les Paul arrives, I'll try some strings on it before I decide what strings to use finally - any suggestions from the Gibson camp? I'm a bit of a Ernie Ball fanboy but am open to other brands.

Oh, and I sold the Stagg bass today. I can play bass guitar, but deep down 'Man, I'm stricly rhythm, I don't want to make it cry or sing'.

Great to see fellow guitarists around here. I own an Ibanez RG507 and more recently a Music Man JP6.

I love the idea of playing a guitar but have no skill at all, I remember see Mark King many years ago and wishing a could play a bass like that ..... the closest I'll get is a sampler and a sequencer lol

I used Ernie Ball strings for years, then one day decided to try D'Adarrio and the difference in tone was amazing on my Strat and I now use them on all my electric guitars. I'll not be going back to EB's.

Yay! :arms

The Les Paul Special II arrived today and despite the package being guitar-shaped and marked 'Fragile' (always a challenge, never a warning for couriers ) it arrived safely and intact.

It's in brilliant condition and a trip to my local guitar shop, Marvel Guitars in Frank Sidebottom country (Timperley, for those that don't know) is on the cards for Saturday, so get some strings to spend an hour or two setting it up. I've never owned or played a Les Paul before, so this is a whole new experience for me and I'm looking forward to it.
