Hello,

I just came into ownership of a GVP 3001 card. It's a rockin card with the RAM module attached to the back and a GVP IDE ROM installed. It boots with an included Maxtor 7245AT HDD just fine.

I've read some that says the GVP.IDE ROM only supports early pre-standard drives. I'm not sure how true that is. The working HDD is not listed as one of the few that work. My next step/test is to install a 500MB DOM IDE. I have some DOM that max out at '1024 cylinders' as their config. This seems to match the stated limit.

Does anyone know if I can use the Commodore HDToolbox to install an additional drive or do I need a GVP HD tool?

It seems my DOM was a bridge too far. I tried using the following drive with no joy.

PQI DJ0032M44RD0
  • Capacity 32MB
  • Cylinder 500
  • Head 8
  • Sector 16
  • Total sectors 64000

When I tried to use HDTollbox to view the drive it would fail to read the drive properly. Some garbage would be displayed in the Manufacture/Model/Version windows. If I manually put in my data (listed above) it would act proper but creating partitions would never actually work. When using Sysinfo I see that the device gvpat is loaded. If I'm reading it properly the driver is v3.3 So I tried a few things in the Information of HDTollbox

device=gvpat.device
and
SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpat.device
and
SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpat.device
XT_DEVICE_NAME=gvpat.device

I was never able to choose the XT option in HDToolbox. Changes I could make were under the SCSI option. My test platform is a rev 6.2 mobo, with 2.04 ROM, and 2.1 AOS

Rando questions
  • does SCSI_DEVICE_NAME need to be in caps? One thread I read says yes. It just seems odd.

ANY RAM8 INSTRUCTIONS out there?

My card appears to have (2) bad SIMMs. If I uninstall the suspected bad SIMMs it boots fine as a 4MB card. It also appears to be either 4 or 8MB only, no 6MB allowed.

More rando questions
  • Sysinfo 4.4 fails load from gotek, at first I thought it may be the bad mem, but now I think it may be the 68030, any opinions?
  • ATK boots fine from gotek, I used this to identify the bad SIMMs

Make sure those SIMMS are Nibble mode or they will not work.

Thanks for the info, buutt........

Shouldn't you be busy dodging falling trees and manning the pumps right now? I hope things are well for you.
