I want to get a bigger HD for my A1200 and wondered if there is anything I need to look out for. I have a buffered IDE interface running IDEFix97 which I currently have a 500MB HD, DVD-Rom and CF drive connected to. The HD is too small so want to go a bit bigger. What should I go for?

Also, on a sidenote, the CF drive always says there are read errors on the CF card, yet it works fine in WinUAE. Is this likely to be a problem with my IDE cable? or the IDE interface?

Get anything you like as long as you can connect it to the ide port. SFS and PFS3AIO can handle massive drives (at least up to 1TB I believe maybe more?). You can even buy cheap adapters from ebay which will let you use sata drives. If you get problems setting it up I might be able to help you, where in the north east are you?

How do I partition such large drives? I think I tried before and couldn't. I'm not far from you! I'm in Birtley, not far from the Angel...

You can do it all with HDToolbox no other software is needed to make the partitions. Then you need the file system you are going to use and loadmodule with a replacement scsi.device file for devs. You can literally get the whole lot done and formatted in about 5 minutes. Then loadmodule is added to your startup-sequence to enable the whole drive.

if you keep it under 8gb (about 7.7gb formatted) you don't need to replace the scsi.device or loadmodule (which causes a reboot to load the patch)

I just tried to make a 200MB partition for WB, then a 3.5GB partition for Games and 1.9GB partition for Work, in that order. I formatted WB which worked out fine, and also Work. Then I formatted Games suspecting that anything over 2GB would break and it has. So, should I keep all partitions under 2GB each? And keep the total space under 8gb? I am using WB3.0 and awas using International mode if it makes a difference...

Nope. Only the first system partition is recommended to be under 2gb and I would recommend much smaller, about 500mb. Also it's best to make it a ffs partition and then I fornat the rest of the drive with sfs. I normally use old laptop ide drives I have from dead laptops. 40gb drives are a good size if you plan to setup WHDLoad.

With my A1200 I have a 500mb ffs system partition, then a 1gb work sfs partition and the rest as one large sfs game partition.

Go to the following link for a very detailed series of guides I wrote on how to do this.

Also regarding your cf card have read errors you might have the transfer rate set wrong when you partitioned it. Details of that are also in my guides.
