Has Facebook Killed Discussion Forums?

There is a seedier side to facebook, middle aged men ogling young girls, making suggestive remarks and sending friends requests. I have lost count of the times my niece has told me about these "Pervs" (her words) trying to get her to add them as a friend.

Some studies have also shown that the more time people spend on FB, the less happy they become. Everybody wants to show off themselves in the best possible light in their profiles, so it is easy to get the feeling that everybody else is happier and more successful than you because even if you try not to, you will always compare yourself to others.

Edit: I wrote 'everybody', but obviously not everybody goes to the same extremes to make themselves look perfect. Some people are not so insecure that they need to portray a fake self, but I still think that most people will show off mostly the good parts like you would do on a date or job interview.

Haha.. well vBulletin definitely supports like/reputation features, the forum admins would just need to switch it on and maybe install a hook to display it in the profile badge on the left below Feedback or something.

The success of Facebook still amazes me. I would have never thought that it would ever be a thing when I saw the website for the first time many years ago. My initial impression was : "What a shitty site, who on earth will use this crap?" Needless to say that I removed my account not much long after...
It's a pity that so many apps/services/websites/etc... try to force you to use Facebook to interact.

I had a Facebook account years ago and deleted it - but then I joined again (mainly for family/friends and some interest groups)

Don't get me wrong; does have its plus points but is so disorganized as opposed to a well structured forum - write a post and in 10 - 20 minutes it'll be buried under a ton more posts - and the arguments on there, the swearing, political agendas, propaganda - it's nauseating to say the least.

If you're interested in Amigas, go to an Amiga Forum.
If you're interested in Ataris, go to an Atari Forum.
If you are interested in cars, go to a car forum.
If your only interest is yourself, selfies and cat pictures, go to Facebook.

I have a similar feeling about Facebook.

It seems like a perfect breeding ground for narcissistic trips, jingoism, bitching and social bullying.

Unfortunately there is so much content on Facebook now, that if you're not on it you're simply missing out.

Agreed there's a tonne of **** to wade through, no arguments there but certainly in my other areas of interest, some of the finds of the decade have emerged on Facebook and they rarely trickle through to the forums.
