Hello!

I'm Jonathan, 39 years old and sort of returning to the Amiga scene.

Probably a familiar story to that of many of you here... I got an A500 way back in 1986 after a few years of Amstrad CPC 464 ownership and put that Amiga through a series of upgrades over the years until I got an A1200 in... 1991 I think it was. I got deeply into the demo scene, more as a trader but got involved with some demo groups as a gfxer and got a couple of 3D tutorials published in Amiga Format at one point. In hindsight though, I wasn't very good

So forward to '96 and university and then work demands dictate I get a PC and having watched Commodore implode on itself my by then heavily upgraded A1200 had to go. Over the intervening years I've dabbled with Amiga emulators for the occasional nostalgia trip.

And now I want to dabble with some actual Amiga hardware. Frankly, that's driven by a need for a new hobby. I've been on the receiving end of two non-fault motorcycle accidents in the past twelve months. Bikes were my passion, kind of still are but more as a spectator. I'll spare you the details and much of the sob story but the most recent accident could easily have left me very seriously injured or worse. The fact it happened two weeks before my first child was born definitely threw things into perspective. So, no more bikes, at least to increase the odds of me seeing my little boy grow up and save Mrs Trooper from undue worry.

...and so back to Amigas. I've got two projects I want to tackle. One has a purist approach and the other definitely doesn't but it'll be the one I tackle first basically because it'll be the cheapest. Frankly, that'll be to butcher an A1200 case and put some kind of PC motherboard in it, finish off the case and run this Aeros thing on it that I've been reading about. I'd like that to be an everyday PC that'll be permanently in my man-cave (the garage!) and it'll have that old-school feel to it that I'm sure we all like. It'll be like being sat behind the wheel of a classic car that's had a Lamborghini engine grafted into it.

The second project is going to be to take an A1200 and wring as much power out of it. Having read some threads from you guys discussing hardware I'm sure I'll get some good advice on the way, because reading what you guys know is like watching seasoned connoisseurs sampling fine wines.

Not so much an intro as a mini-biography, eh?! Thanks in advance for what I'm sure will be a warm welcome.

- Jonathan

Welcome to the 'bay!

Christchurch isn't all that far from here!

Welcome and good luck with your projects! Apart from the occasional soldering iron burn, or a slipping screwdriver there is no injuries to be had with this hobby, so you can be safe with your daddy-hood. Not counting the third type of injury to your wallet if you want to max out your 1200..

Yes indeed! And I was just going to say, your Amiga collection is terrible. You must give them all to me. Now!

I read your post about accelerators. Great stuff mate. I've picked up mention here of something called ACA accelerators... still not sure if that acronym is a manufacturer or some technology in the things. So much has changed in the Amiga scene over the years, great to see it's very much alive and kicking!

I think you are going to be skipping the ACA accelerators, and going straight for an Apollo/blizzard 1260 or even beyond ....

Howdy from sunny Devon :D

How do, neighbour!

Yep, 100% agreed having read Andy's accelerators guide last night. Thanks for the advice mate.

Are you going to tower the 1200 or keep it in the wedge case ? (for me its only really an amiga in a wedge case as thats how I experienced it back in the day)

The wedge case limits your options a bit more - lots of the senior guys on here (who will chime in shortly) seem to view PPC stuff in a wedge as just a pain in the butt. Possibly even in a tower as well. If your are not going PPC then I think your main things will be a Blizzard/Apollo 1260 (possibly speak to Stan (Stachu))
and something like an indivision depending on what you are going to connect it to.
Obviously the fancy case mods like CD drives and USB ports are cool but beyond me.
I use CF card as the hard drive - others prefer real drives. As I have mine accessible from the side using kipper2k's CF card adapter I can take the card out and make changes and back it up using WINuAE quite easily.

Good luck and make sure to post pics and news of how you get on.

Also, if you are going to keep it for a while, and the one you get has not been done, consider getting it recapped. Although many are continuing OK its probably just a matter of time and we seem to be hitting the limits as quite often it seems people are experiencing problems.

It's going to be in the wedge case for exactly the same reasons you've stated. The two Amigas I'm going to build will be very different from each other but to me at least, both will be Amigas. There's ground for debate on at least one of them for sure though.

Not that I think that putting the A1200 in a tower case is wrong or anything but it's just not my preferred route for that particular project. Challenges like keeping the thing cooled would be easy and I'm liking the idea of solving problems like that, even if they've been solved by others in the past as I'm sure they will have been. But yes I'm with you - it's an Amiga so long as it's wearing the right clothes at least.

My pimped up 1200 won't be getting an optical drive. They're obsolete. (The irony of that statement isn't lost on me!)

Bear in mind I'm playing catch-up with you guys here on what's achievable. I didn't know about the CF card adapter until you mentioned, it for example. It's been added to my mods list

no optical drive:wooha: how on earth will you load up the CD32 isos? of the AFCDs? or listem to CD albums? or install 4.7gb of stuff from a DVD?

I use Kipper2k's one, which comes out above the PCMCIA slot. BUT, if you want to add a fastATA (I think) then this may not all fit together. I have seen a similar result achieved with the CF card poking out the back of the a1200. For messing around with the setup it is so much more convenient than opening the case each time.....

Cooling will depend how hard you really want to push. The latest mask Blizzards run relatively cool (certainly cooler then the MK-IV 1230). Mine only really needs the fan if I run it over 60 mhz I think. (Sometimes I run it at 80, but I only have a 64mb simm that works at that level, the 128mb one crashes at 80mhz).

the Indy however needed a small fan and also has meant I needed to put a heatsink on the Alice chip (I think it was).

Edit - I am probably talking rubbish about the fastata not fitting but kippers adapter may block other stuff - not sure.

You wouldn't want them. They're rubbish. Especially that A3000. Awful, awful things!

ACA is the name given to Individual Computers' recently manufactured accelerator cards, "Amiga Classic Accelerator" I think. Have a look at icomp.de for more about what Jens and Individual have been up to. The guy makes all kinds of neat Amiga hardware.

O/P sounds like my story tbh!

Same thing, Nuts the moment I clapped eye's on an early A500 running War in Middle Earth. Drooled over that thing for a while having to put up with an Spectrum 48k then Atari STE.

So welcome to the forum!

Also noticed your recent haul, nice one
I would say LOOK AFTER IT!. do not copy me... I got into a phase where I built two custom amiga towers and got a little bored, sold one and stripped the other. I really wish that never happend and I kick myself almost daily for it.
