Hello AmiBay,

Having owned first a 2000 HD, when new, then later an Amiga 1200 with Blizzard 060, which I stupidly sold.. I was without an Amiga for many years, getting by with WinUae.

Now many years later, as of three days ago in fact, I stumbled on an Amiga 4000/040 D with Video Toaster 4000 and attached Flyer module. (Commodore 2002 monitor too.) -For $XXX USD! Could have knocked me over with a feather.

So, once again, I'm proud to be an Amigan!

The 4000d seems so tough to get expansions for compared to a 1200. Ugh! I don't even know where to begin with: Flicker fixer (Would like to use this thing with my modern LCD Monitor -Picasso IV, if I can find one?) Ethernet adapter, possibly a mediator?

Suggestions?

So, hello and thanks!

Hi there! Welcome to AmiBay. I had to remove the price you paid for your A4000 since there is no price discussion allowed on AmiBay because it is considered price driving. However, it does look like you got a good deal. :)

As for add-ons for your A4000, you could get an Indivision AGA scan doubler in order to use your system on a modern monitor. A RTG card will also give you higher resolutions than the on-board graphics are capable of doing. Of course, the Picasso IV can do both these things so it's also a viable option if you were planning on doing both anyhow.

For other expansions, you could add a USB card, which will give you less expensive add-ons plus external expansion, or you could go with traditional Zorro cards, such as the X-Surf Network Card, to expand your system.

There are a multitude of drive options available as well. If you have a SCSI controller, you can use Jaz Drives, SCSI Hard Drives, and just about any other SCSI device. Many SCSI cards also have much greater speed because they can use DMA, unlike the on-board IDE controller that cannot. If you do decide to use the on-board IDE controller, you can use CF cards as hard drives, IDE CD-ROM drives, etc.

If you'd like to replace or augment the floppy drive, you can get the HxC Floppy Emulator. There are models to fit in the floppy bay (HxC Rev F) and there are the other versions (HxC Rev C) that are more difficult to mount, but have a much nicer screen. You can see my HxC Rev C A4000 mod here: https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=44248.

Good luck no matter what you do, and welcome to your new addiction.

Heather

*EDIT*

I forgot to mention. I think the Mediator requires you to put the guts from your A4000D into a tower. I'd love if I were wrong on this because it would be wonderful to use PCI cards in my A4000D. :)

Ah, whoops on the price thing. Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions. I was really surprised to see the Amiga, even classic Amiga scene going so strong!

Amazing! Thanks again!

Mediator

Mediator

Elbox has a Mediator / radeon 9200 combo for sale..
Would this combo enable me to have flicker free output from the radeon via picasso 96 to a modern lcd as well?

Also this would enable me to buy cheap nic card / usb..
