Can anyone recommend some decent home accounting software?

I used to use Microsoft Money a few years ago, but they discontinued it. For the past few years I've just been using Excel, setting up custom spreadsheets, however it can be a bit time consuming to set up each month.

What I want to be able to do is input the monthly expenses and income, and be able to see the account balance on each day, with it showing when each payment is withdrawn and the remaining balance. Nothing too complex.

So any suggestions? I really don't want a full blown accountancy package like those by Sage as they are way OTT for what I need and much too complicated. I also don't want anytihng that requires being online as I want my accounts to remain private and not in someone's "cloud".

Am also using Excel so am quite interested in the answer to this as well.

What is it they say?:

To err is human, but to really f**k up you need Excel........

This is a strange coincidence as I was looking into the exact same thing this afternoon!

I really liked Microsoft Money and used it for years until they discontinued it. I'm now using Quicken Deluxe and it's not too much of a learning curve to switch from the old Money software. I was even able to import my old Money data so I still have that history available if I need it.

I tried some of the open source/free software that is available but they were all lacking in one way or another. It's been a while so maybe some of them are better. Another plus is that pretty much every online banking site works with Quicken.

Good luck!

What OS do you want to use? Assuming windows since you used Money.
Will add a few for the Amiga, just in case :).

Windows:
Quickbooks and Quicken (Quicken will be your best bet for simple) is a decent home solution that you can run on premise.
Peachtree a bit more complicated than QB, but does the job and can be installed on premise.

Amiga:
CheckItOut - Used for my home accounting for the last 20 years. It has budget capability, fast input screens, and decent Balance Sheet and Income Statement. Only issue you will have to track down the author to purchase it (if you can...).
Phasar - a bit more formal of an accounting system. Think it was converted from PC to the Amiga, cheap can find on Ebay for $20.
Money Matters - think this was a nice system. One is on Ebay now for 20 or so euro...

Good luck...

That's exactly what happened to me too! Used Money since Money 95 but had to change. After a lot of research I eventually went for Banktree Personal Finance 2.0. I like it a lot and it's only £25.

I've found GnuCash to do the job just fine. :)
I really tried to like GnuCash but, at the time, it just didn't do what I was already doing in Money. That's been quite some time ago though so it may be much better now. :)

I should note that I've never used Microsoft Money at all, so I've got no idea about how each stacks up against the other. :p

I think I still have Microsoft Money in a box somewhere and slightly off topic, Music Central as well.

The problem with MS Money now is that if you had the latest patched version and then created or saved your "Money file" - you needed the exact same version to open the file if you ever had to reinstall your system. The only way to get the patch was to connect to the MS Server and let it update - but MS turned this off therefore making your MSMoney file useless...

Bit of a bummer - but they did give lots of notice and I find Banktree much better any way.

I highly recommend Money Matters.

However, its authors, Exmouth based Digita no longer support their Amiga software.

I've not had a problem with it yet though.
