ok. so after an age talking to the manufacturer we came to the agreement that i dont send this back and they give me a partial refund. the alternative with shipping costs would have ended up the same relitive money back but id be a broken soldering iron down..

so here is a picture..

The flame should be blue and pointy like a oxyasetalyn welder, but as you can see its like a bunsen burner. The same happens with the soldering tips and so the catalyst never glows and the thing just flames away.
It worked for about a day and i did use it to do a bunch of stuff, but then when i tried to use it the day after it just did that..

Hoping some 1 has some sort of idea.

Thats not a soldering iron mate, its freakin proton pack from Ghostbusters!

yeah i trapped one of those meercat ghosts with it lol..
But id really like to be able to solder with it again :D

-=edit=-
um its some cheapo thing..
Renmei Sl-2000k. then a bunch of chinese writing.. i think it probably says "guaranteed to fail within 48hours ha!"

i should have forked out the extra to get a good one, But hey Sometimes im cheap. (although i did spend £200 on a mouse once)

It's a fuel/air mix problem. What I think may be the problem is that the gas nozzle (the brass one you can see inside the holes in the picture) may be partly blocked. The combustion air is normally drawn in through the side holes by the venturi effect of gas coming out at speed from the small orifice in the nozzle, a bit like a carburettor.

If there's no suction to draw air in via the venturi effect, you get the 'bunsen burner' flame you mention, as it's too fuel-rich.

I suggest that if you have some thin fuse wire, I would use some to clear anything that may be partially obstructing the orifice. The same issue can be seen on camping stoves.

The makers of Primus stoves used to provide a short length of fine wire on a tab that they called a 'pricker', but making comments about probing your orifice with a pricker, you can see where this is likely to head....

;)

yes your right on the money Merlin, the flame would be like that without the nozzle end on it.
You will only get the blue flame with air / oxygen being added to the mixture and as there is no separate oxygen supply a Venturi will create the air flow. It is a problem with the nozzle

mike.

that didnt work :(

i noticed that some of it was full of what looks like foam for sofas. so i removed that and then there was some gause which is probably some rudimentary flash back prevention, I assume the foam is there to limit the flow of the gas so i put more in there but that didnt help all it did was make the bunsen burner flame smaller..

im begining to think there was some sort of filter in here as well "possibly activated charcole?" and thats either fallen out or worn out or something.

the venturi works though as i see a diference when i place my fingers over the air intake holes.

I believe cause you must place it in your trash bin immediately before an accident happens to!

Just set it on fire and... oh wait that won't work either.

Given that none of the tips work, I'd say there must be some sort of reducer in the base unit that has failed.
