I used to be a coffee geek. I own/have owened an mid end espresso machine, a vaccumpot, bialetti, frenchpress, aeropress, drip coffee maker and misc other tools like the cloth sieve they use in brazil - all this in the hunt for the best cup of coffee.

However, about every of this methods is a hassle and require a lot of cleaning. The first bite of the sour apple was the purchase of a moccamaster. But by keeping it cleaned, and cleaning anything that touches the coffee every time I run the dishwasher - the coffee comes out with great aroma. The next step was when I want something more concentrated. I recalled my previous espressomachine both was expensive, huge and slighly messy. So when my better half bought me a nespresso for christmas I gave that a serious try. (beside tasting over at friends places). I have to say, for the complete lack of mess it's liberating. I've not found any favorites among the selection, but yet again convinency have won in the long run.

What about you guys? Or I'm not sure if englishmen even drink coffee. I used to be into teas as well, but now I only drink twinings earl gray. Probably after the wife put the foot down when it came to the useage of cupboard space.

I don't like tea at all - in fact I hate the stuff.

As for coffee any standard coffee is fine with me as long as it's got one sugar and milk in it.

Dave G

My dad spent some formative years in Brazil as a teen, so he acquired his taste for coffee there, subsequently passed on to his children ;) Strong, dark roast, with just enough cream and sugar to take the edge off.

I use a Gaggia Classic coffee machine with a little hand-grinder. What I drink would probably be best described as a cup of espresso and these days I can't handle more than one or two of them in a day.

I'm quite anal about how it tastes or looks and if I don't get the grind right or for some reason I don't get a decent crema I start all over again :D

It is annoying to have to clean the machine each time, but that encourages me to sit down and actually enjoy the coffee.

For when I'm out and about I use a Handpresso Domepod coupled with my hand grinder and a volcano kettle for true electricity-free espresso making

It depends on the brand. Normally strong and black though.

As for tea I'm becomming partial to a cup of TEA. EARL GREY. HOT. (No milk or sugar).

I like my coffee black, no sugar, made from the light roasted blends. I do enjoy an espresso now and then but mostly just the regular stuff.

I've got a Moccamaster CD that I use for my daily brewing. I also got a percolator but I don't use it very often as it is more hassle to keep clean.

That is me a while ago. my Gaggia Classic Coffee however died in a move. The pump died and when I moved I managed to loose the box with some of the parts rendering the machine needing spare parts for more than a machine is new. (they price the parts high). So I ventured in other directions from there.

How do you like your coffee?

Hot, strong, a dash of milk, two sweeteners per cup and delivered intravenously via a drip stand, please......

Caffeine? It's a food group......

Used to enjoy all the nice expensive varieties of various beans, but nowadays, just Nescafe Cap Columbie, tastes great and it's quite cheap :p

I'm a bit of a coffee geek myself. I've been through a similar story and have half-a-dozen coffee appliances in the house which never get used because they're so much faff.

These days, my compromise between nice coffee and convenience is a Mehlita one-cup filter. You put a filter paper in it, a scoop of coffee, put it over your mug and pour hot water from the kettle into it. Once it's filtered through, throw the filter paper in the bin and rinse the filter itself. Simplicity itself and nice coffee to boot!

And you call yourselves English...:p

If I had to drink coffee? I wouldn't.

Lots of milk, lots of sugar.

If I were to ask the same question in Norway, I doubt many would use milk and sugar. Italian coffee drinks like latte and cappuccino is popular here as well, but the majority of people choosing this over black coffee is women (seemingly). Quite fun to see how this is from country to country.

With milk and one suger, stirred not shaken.

I used to drink instant coffee for years with lots of coffeee and lots of milk, tbh it was like mud. Now I have a level spoonful of coffee granules and hardly any milk. much nicer.

My coffee filter machine thing is packed away in a cupboard somewhere. Can't seem to get that perfect filtered coffee flavor.

Blue Java beans I grind my self, heat water to 80 degrees and then let it brew for 2 or 3 minutes in the pot before I push down the handle and then enjoy.

Ive got an espresso pot too which I can put on the stove, and Im dreaming of an Ascaso dream coffee maker. Ive also considered the mocca master, but I mostly drink coffe at work, and then from a machine that seems like its passing on indigestion onto your cup.

I think you will find that an englishman will drink coffee more often today than previously. The UK has seen an explosion in coffee houses in cities and towns from Starbucks, Nero, Costa Coffee etc. etc. over the past ten years or so. Although you can buy tea here, it is usually the last option on the menu board :)

I personally swing both ways (in the hot drinks world!),I can do tea and coffee but as always in life - never cross the streams (i.e. take both drinks together!)

My best cup of coffee was in Portugal, Lisbon last month. My colleagues told me that they really love a strong coffee at lunch to set them up for the rest of the day. I sat down them with them, and was presented a very small cup with some frothy black liquid.

I didn't add any sugar and they all said "what are you doing? you will need sugar with that!" and they all added and stirred in sugar. I took it raw, I'm not joking it was the strongest stuff ever - the sugar must take the edge off it.

Best coffee ever, still feeling the effects one month later! I also love coffee flavour cakes, chocolate etc. yum yum.
