I guess I'm not the only one, I've lost a good few opportunities in the past to get minted, but for some reason things just don't add up.

This one however takes the biscuit/p!ss:

My Dear Friend,

I am Mercy Akpata, a Computer IT with central bank of Nigeria. I am 25 years old, just started work with C.B.N. I came across your file which was marked X and your released disk painted RED, I took time to study it and found out that you have paid VIRTUALLY all fees and certificate but the fund has not been release to you. The most annoying thing is that they cannot tell you the truth that on no account will they ever release the fund to you, instead they let you spend money unnecessarily.

I do not intend to work here all the days of my life, I can release this fund to you if you can certify me of my security, and how I can run away from this Nigeria if I do this, because if I don't run away from this country after i made the transfer, I will be seriously in trouble and my life will be in danger. Please this is like a Mafia setting in Nigeria, you may not understand it because you are not a Nigerian.

The only thing I will need to release this fund is a special HARD DISK we call it HD120 GIG. I will buy two of it, recopy your information, destroy the previous one, punch the computer to reflect in your bank within 24 banking hours. I will clean up the tracer and destroy your file, after which I will run away from Nigeria to meet with you. If you are interested.

Do get in touch with me immediately,You should send to me your convenient tell/fax numbers for easy communications and also re confirm your banking details, so that there won't be any mistake. For phone conversation, please call me on +2348056670722, Email:(myyakpata@yahoo.ca)

Regards,
Miss Mercy Akpata.
I'm still looking for my ass, coz. I lost it while ROTFLMFAO.:(

So, if you're in for a 120 Gig, and wanna meet Mercy, please be my guest.

How's that for a Sunday Gig?

Thats great i need some HD120 gig too

I haven't seen one of the "special hard drive" scams floating around in a while!

I highly recommend reading the 419Eater.com forum, if anyone's interested in seeing a well-organised group do their bit to (safely!) mete out a bit of karma to proven scammers. It's hilarious reading.

I'm a bit disappointed that I've actually never received one of these special HDD emails. :(

They probably have been sent, but my email server spam filter has probably caught them before they arrive in my Outlook spam filter.

I never get how anyone would actually fall for something that strange. And it must be a very old scam to be referencing what is now a very small and impossible to find size of HD.

hold on guys

hold on guys

" I will buy two of it, recopy your information, destroy the previous one, punch the computer to reflect in your bank within 24 banking hours."

He needs TWO of them I bet... so we have to find 2 of this special drive to make him happy.... any luck on that? BTW why he want's to make a copy and destroying it... won't be easier just to take it?

Just called the number, but for some strange reason I got a message that there was something wrong.:o

Did you know that cyber-crime has become a big multi million business nowadays? It seems that there are more wizz-kids at those up2nogood dens than at Redmond?

I guess that a lot of peeps are just too gullible, but still better than a few scumbags entering your abode on the most unwanted moments.

I must hand it to them though, there are some crafty fückers around, some e-mails are just too "genuine", I got one which I just couldn't resist.
They asked me for my CC details, and I decided to feed them some bogus intel, but even the algorithms to check the number details were working, close but no cigar though.

i'll buy you one with the 21.5 million USD in an Arifcan bank account that seems to be mine ...

i didn't even know i had an african bank account....

I hope for your sake that you called with an old phone and prepay card, not your houseline or mobile.

I am sorry but my phone has been unfortunately cut off as I am findings myself temporarily without fundings for my Pay-as-you-Go phone, but if you can be lending me some cash monies a for a few days, I am sure that I can release some of the millions that are held in a local bankings to me on behalf of a recently deceased realtive and I will send you some of the most honest and legitimate cash monies in return.

My dear sir. As per AmiBay rules you must declare a price for the products that you're selling.

Nope, I always use a VOIP client for international calls, and guess what? It cost me 7 €cents, so in a way I've been shafted, but it won't break the bank though, I hope that sister Mercy will have a ball with X-mas.:p

Wants replying to and asking if these HD120 GIG hard disks he needs should be SATA, SCSI or IDE.
Also, why is he going to PUNCH the computer? Won't that hurt his knuckles a bit? :boxer:

I guess it depends on what you are aiming for, if it's an el-cheapo pc or notebook it's not going to hurt much, an Amiga 3000T or Military Spec A2000 that is a 100% guarantee for bleeding knuckles and even bone breaking is possible :-D

:unsure:Just in case any of you are interested in that whole 'Nigerian email swindle' thing and want to understand more about that scene... there's a novel I read called "419" by Will Ferguson (2012) in which these scams are front and centre. (Supposedly based on actual situations and actions researched by the author). Really amazing how these schemes work!
Book got some prestigious awards here in Canada too. I think we must have a few silly people around here.:p

I wont look at nowt under 1TB so its a big fat no from moi !

What amazes me is that people still refer to those that get caught by these scammers as 'silly' or 'idiots' when in actual fact that is simply not always the case. I have a client who is in his early 70's, has his own multi-million pound business, staff and all that which he built up himself after leaving the army some years ago. He's very well educated, travels the world on his yacht and loves his fast cars (that he seems to change more often than I have hot dinners).

Would you believe he got scammed? He realised he'd been scammed after the event. He'd gotten one of those phone calls saying 'your PC is infected, we at Microsoft need you to do the following so we can fix it'. He gave them full access and paid the £300 initial payment for them to 'fix' the problem on his pc that had him very worried. It took a week for him to finally tell me what had happened. These scammers are professionals - it's thier job to be good at scamming. Obviously the OP's scam is not one of the good ones :-)
