I have had it with the bloody Amiga, I have tried to be patient and understanding, I have thrown what little money I have at it and it still just gives me the finger and says f**k you man for I will never make it easier like it was. I just wanted to get back into writing on OctaMED and the little things like buying the Amiga working and then the CPU and Agnus dying, getting them replaced along with the CAPS, then having the replacement mouse sent to the wrong address now the post office say it is lost, then the PCMCIA port just not giving me anything so I can`t even install OctaMED in the first place, while I keep buying different SD and CF cards which just don`t work or pop up once and then give up the ghost.

The Amiga used to be a nice cheap computer now it has become a bloody expensive, time wasting paper weight. I really wanted to enjoy the Amiga again in 2013 but it just has been one thing after another. I think it is just karma saying, time to say goodbye to the Amiga ....

It's like that sometimes. This stuff is 20+ years old and sadly some of it has had enough.

I'd been doing quite well, hooking Amiga disks inside my PC and using WinUAE to write ClassicWB on to them, but last night's fiasco with an IDE adapter destroying a laptop 40GB disk has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Sometimes the best thing to do is take a break from it, and come back again later when you're ready to try again.

It's taken me literally years to get to where I am with my Amiga projects, and I've still not finished them. I guess that's just the nature of the hobby.

I hope you get things sorted soon! I've been mucking about in OctaMED again recently, it's so much fun!

I am hoping that maybe I can find a basic A1200 and upgrade it with some ram and then use it for OctaMED again. Did some tracks again in an emulator and having them going onto a digital download compilation so I really hope I can get it back into OctaMED on the real hardware again.

I'm not aware of any reason why the A600 should be any less reliable than the A1200, but I guess it's possible.

Writing MOD files doesn't need a great deal of system resource, but if you're mucking about with more complex songs, you might need a bit more RAM. 2MB ChipRAM might be enough to cut it, but a bit of FastRAM will make sure.

And if all else fails, there's always OctaMED SoundStudio for the PC. Something which I bought, but never got round to using...

I think I have just been unlucky, each time I have bought an A600 there is a problem with reading the SD cards, which worked fine in my A1200, maybe I have some kind of jinx. Yep a standard A1200 with some fast ram will be find for OctaMED, that is what I would like to use again. An 030 would nice for some of the audio processing but it is not so important. I used OctaMED studio but I found Renoise to be much nicer to use.

Have you looked into the Minimig? It's a hardware implementation of the Amiga 500 with modern components. Using SD card as native storage, a real 68000 cpu which safely can be overclocked to 49 MHz with a hotkey combination and so on. You can use it with any Amiga monitor or VGA (but the latter must support 50 Hz vsync if you use PAL, which not all do).

I think karma is rather saying to you, you will have all these problems, but if you give it patience and time, it will work out, and it will be great in the end.

There are times when everything seems to go wrong and one problem leads to another. The best is to set the project aside for a few days then go at it again. I find some problems just go away or there is a simple solution.

One time I've only opened the top cover of my CDTV and found that it was sompletely dead. No leds, no output, nothing. I've spent hours checking cords, voltages, trying to find the problem and was quite devastated. A few days later I've plugged in again (with the cover off still) and it worked completely fine. To this very day I have no idea what has happened..

It took me 3 years to complete just 1 (one!!) A4000 desktop project.
But now I'm more than happy.

This hobby is not cheap - true.
Most Amiga gears is 20+ years old and need always some attention.
In general: if you are not technical person it's better to give all hardware to skilled and trusty person to clean/check/replace everything that needs to be done.

Of course everything can fail (even brand new equipent), but using old equipment witohut giving any attention to it it's the best way of getting frustration only.

On the other side: I know much more expensive hobbies as well.

I usually repairing the amiga and the last story was about my a4000T
CIA an paula were dead, i changed them i test the board with special diagnostic roms (logica dioaloga) everything was perfect, i test the 4000T... no way black screen, as i was sure it was the cia i desold eveything, sold them agin, once, twice... til the day i destroy some tracks.... ahhhhhhhhhhh s*** !
so i decide to work on my second one... (was suppose to work 100% when i bought it)
black screen.

finally after hours and hours of tests it appears thats the a3640 (rv 3.1) was working perfectly with the logica roms but not with the 3.1 roms...
i mod it to REV 3.2.... same black screen
so i deceided to buy a 040 board, i found it, bought it (thank you here !)
just to test i decided to put the a3640 at 33Mhz.... and then everything's ok now...
all those hours spent for nothing, all those tracks stupidly destroy under the CIA, all those money spent for just a 66/33 mhz quartz !!!!!!!!!
Only Amiga make it possible ! ^^

Since I lost all the data on CF, I dont trust "card-HDDs" anymore. Simply I use 2.5" HDD in desktop A600 and A1200 and I am satisfied. Getting Amiga and do recapping is a must. Getting Amiga and do chemical cleaning is a must. Amiga = special computer needs special care.

i havent really got anything bad to say about my hobby,i know it wont last forever.but i can try.
i dont ever remember it being cheap though
its cheaper now than it used to be to get these machines and most of there addons.

Old computers is definitely not the cheapest of hobbies but on the other hand there are definitely more expensive hobbies than old computers. Also you'll probably get more bang for the buck, if you concentrate on one system. With the money I've spent to all my stuff, I'd have a pretty beefy A4000 and probably some spare parts too.

Old computers as a hobby is pretty similar to having old cars as a hobby. It isn't a requirement but it can help you to save a pretty penny if you know about how electronics works and how to service them yourself. Same thing for cars.

Its certainly food for thought. What are we going to do when our Amigas are no longer salvageable? Build new ones probably.

I hope this does happen, and somehow that I'm involved in it in some way.

I'm not bothered about a new modern spec Amiga like Mr i7 up there. More speed and memory is always nice, but not at the cost of what we already have.

I will not be without an Amiga, and anyone that tries to force me will die! (No one will die)

Well we can't change your mind, but let me offer my thoughts on this.

I have often been wondering the same thing, it's also why I open the thread: How long are Amiga's going to survive ?

It's always going to be rough and sometimes expensive.
However, just the joy of seeing a little girl playing on my Amiga 1200, makes it all worth it.

It's not just for me, I do enjoy a few games on it, but I am also doing it for the next generation.

And like Stan said, there are way more expensive hobbies out there, like having a styled and tuned car for example.
Nothing wrong with it, I would love to have one also, but I see cars that basically cost 10 grand and they put in over 20 to 50 even a 100 grand in it.
