So what does everyone think about the new devices?

http://www.apple.com/uk/

As a mobile/website developer I need to keep up to date so generally always get the latest Apple handset. But I'm not sure I like the idea of how big either of them are. iPhone 4 to 5 was a big jump in size, this is the same again and the 6 Plus is verging on Phablet size. My thumb is simply not big enough to reach that far :) and if I need to use two hands, I may as well just use my iPad.

The watch looks interesting, will definitely be checking it out at least, again mainly out of curiosity of how it displays websites and apps.

Slow to the market with the watch, but phone wise, they dropped the only advantage they had - smaller size than the Android counterparts.

I think I want one of those watches :)

What benefit does the iphone 6 bring over the iphone 5 ?

Yep there are other smart watches out already, but Apple were years behind others releasing a tablet and they never really took off until the iPad. So maybe this will be the same, although personally with an iPhone already I don't see the need for one on my wrist (I said the same about the iPad though!)

I used to think my HTC One was massive after I moved up from the Desire S but I quickly got used to it. These days I find the iPhone 5 far too small and restrictive: surfing on it is a bit like looking at a webpage through a letter box. As a mobile games developer myself I have access to all kinds of devices and the 4.7" devices seem to be the norm these days. Frankly, I'm amazed it took Apple this long to release a bigger phone.

Will the watch be bundled with the phone or will it be separate purchase ?

It looks like separate purchase for approx £250 ? hmm

Separately and not available until next year.

The big one looks like my Note 2 with a round buttons. Due my upgrade next month, not sure if I'm going to bother yet - though it wouldn't be with one of these.

Going from iPhone to Xperia Compact next month. To me, Apple have lost their edge, have stagnated, and were consequently overtaken on the inside :)

With age creeping up on me my eye's need help. I'm using HTC one too type this with my sausage fingers at 1920x1080 and its a very fast phone. The wife's iPhone 5 is nice but I find too small for my club hands. I Like my HTC one but the wife wants me on photo stream and a larger faster iPhone appeals too me.

I'm not an Apple fanboy, but being using iPhones for a couple of years with current an iPhone 5S (64GB) I can say that I really liked the new models.
If I had the budget, I'd certainly would go for the 6 Plus. I saw the Note 2 and Note 3 from some colleagues of mine, and I could certainly get used of the size of it. Big screen and being something between an iPhone and iPad mini is really great.
Also I saw that you'll get iPad features like horizontal orientation versions of Email, messages etc, and probably other coders will take advantage of the HD screen accordingly.
Certainly, Apple isn't showing much innovation the last years, but certainly implements A LOT BETTER the software on the hardware, making smartphone a really enjoy-full experience overall. Just wait to see how NFC and Apple Pay will spread (although it's present since 2012 in other markets). Camera also got a nice buff, and I definitely prefer those extras comparing than crossing the MORE Megapixels road for showing big numbers to the competition. Slo-Mo, Panoramas and now Timelapse by default are also nice as well.

Sorry I never liked the Android platform much, although with a decent device like Samsung's S5/Note3 or HTC's One 32GB the CPU power is ok for pleasant operation (that imho lacks in the low end models).
If I didn't have an iPhone, I would have bought an Xiaomi with Miui instead that is definitely the way to go for me. Recent updates and tonz of innovation softwarewize is truly remarkable.

Apple Watch on the other hand is YEARS ahead from the competition. I didn't like the design much (although they have a great deal of models and colors to choose from) but the software and how smart the implemented it along with the crown usage is truly unique making other smart watches look like Dick Tracey toys.
I'd certainly wouldn't buy one though, as I find it rather unuseful for me.

I knew it wouldn't take long to descend into an Apple vs Android debate

Saw that stupid 'welcome to 2012' thing on Facebook earlier. Whichever idiot made it seems incapable of distinguishing between innovations and choices. Apple could have made the iPhone with a 24" screen back in 2007 if they wanted to, the size and resolution of the screen has nothing to do with innovation. The same for NFC - Apple have been talking about it for years, but as with 4G they didn't implement it the minute it was available because nobody could use it at the time because the infrastructure wasn't there yet. The rest aren't even worth giving the time of day, the iPhone's been able to do all of those things with third party apps (just as Android does) for just as long.

Not to mention the Android OS itself, dreadful.

I see people giving apple a hard time as usual, but in the end the iphone 6 is a very fast and well built smartphone. That size allows for features other larger phones already has is quite a moot point. It is what they do with them that matters. The combination of phase detection autofocus and optical stabilization is not seen in any other phones. Apple have got space for nfc and is putting the finger sensor to good use. iOS 8 with OS X Yosemite is also such a good pair now.

But by all means, samsung s5, xperia z3, lg g3 etc - is all great phones in their own respect. Just no need to give one particular make a hard time for doing what they had to do.

Its always the same, whenever we discuss any new apple devices the android people always come out
with their criticisms, the 2012 image above is irrelevant and focusses on any commonality between the models and excludes the advances the iphone6 has.

Android users seem to have a continuous chip on their shoulder.
