Hey is Phoenix again i know there are some old skool gamers here that appreciate this topic

I always wanted to own a nes from a little boy (i am 25 now) tell me guys is it worth buying? and if so what are good games to find for it?

and of course i want to experiment with it (case painting) and maybe restore it
with a new 72 pin connection.

please fell free to educate me people

Absolutely worth it, there is a long list of games to play, such as:

  • Super Mario Bros (and 3)
  • Megaman 2/3
  • Castlevania
  • Probotector
  • The Legend of Zelda (and II)
  • Dr. Mario (I still play with my Dad - and I'm 27).
  • Adventures of Lolo 3
  • Ducktales
  • Chip & Dale
  • Rockin' Cats
  • R.C. Pro-Am
  • Willow
  • Metroid
  • Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
  • Little Nemo: The Dream Master
  • Final Fantasy (although NTSC, it's easy to mod the region-lock chip to play all regions).

I think I could go forever (I'm only listing the good ones I have in my head that I currently own...) so yes, for me owning a NES is a great pleasure :)

I've messed with NES chips and 72-pin connectors a lot and that's very easy - but I never painted or modded one on the outside; I guess I love that grey from the 80's.

However, I think it must be a easy console to do. The console opens easily in two parts, the lines are straight - so no curves or complicated zones - and there is a lot of pictures of modded consoles online, so I'm sure you'll be able to find some good modding hints via google.

thanks man when i buy one ill post some pic's now last question where can i find decently priced nes games Ebay is extortionate

This one is difficult; nowadays, especially in NES games, prices are extortionate as you say. Super Mario Bros. (the best-selling game -non-bundled- in history, until the sims, if I remember well) is so common (47 million cartridges, approx) that should sell for [SNIP]. It's real nonsense, I agree, but it's what people is willing to pay out there...

Sometimes you can find good deals in console + a few games through classified ads (even online) if you know any. Another option would be to use a Nes Everdrive, and r0jaws started a thread for a group buy:

https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=40860

And through eBay, with a bit of patience, you can always find something; especially if you don't mind buying NTSC cartridges from the USA, which are usually cheaper - both for current currency change and availability, as PAL A (UK standard) is only used mainly in UK and Italy, and PAL B - not compatible with PAL A unless you disable the lockout chip - only for Spain/France/Benelux/Germany. But avoid paying too much, I agree with you on this

Good luck!

Don't forget Super Mario Bros 2 (it's not normal mario but it's still a good game) and then there is Tetris, this was the best version of Tetris until TetrisDS came out imo.

yeah man that Nintendo for you great company but i hate the marketing practices, also these ebay extortionate prices make me just lol ill have a look
ive even seen some here and to be quite honest i think the price is a bit unjustifiable :o

gotta love tetris

Very much worth it though games for it are expensive (like all retro Nintendo's, many of the leading titles anyway).

Hell yea!

and if game prices scares you, you got powerpak or the everdrive cart that you can fill up with your favorites.

+1 .. I bought some 10 or so games each from evilbay. and the console itself. and the 72pin connector. and the damn screwdriver bits to open up the games. and clipped the region blocking pin foot.

next purchase will be Powerpak http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=24 for obvious reasons. Those carts take a crapload of space :)

thats something to consider but yeah Nintendo has always been premium price tags, ill hunt down some stuff on gumtree

NES is ALWAYS fun! In case you've enough funds separated for that, get a PowerPak or N8 Everdrive.
Try also;
-Mighty Final Fight
-Tetris
-Prince of Persia. :)

Yes A real NES is totally worth it!

But forget about the new 72-pin connector! Just do the very easy lock out chip mod and all the games load perfect every time :)

Adding a clean, fresh connector will help the console read the cartridge easily, the lockout chip is an another story.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Do both, I say :)

Has anyone had to recap their NES? I have on that works great except it seems to generate wavy lines throughout the screen while playing. It seems to get better as the machine warms up so I'm thinking this might be caused by caps.

There are some great games on NES but many of them are done better with their sequels on the SNES.

  • Megaman 2/3
  • Castlevania
  • Probotector

Super Mario Bros 2 are interesting and well worth playing. Don´t go dissing on it just because it has that Doki Doki Panic stamp on it... maybe you don´t know the whole story... You could argue for Allstar version on snes but the gameplay is the same and the graphics are very good on NES too.

All the Megamans deserve a playthrough or at least they should be given a chance.

Zelda 2 is actually more interesting than Zelda 1 because Zelda 3 on SNES does everything so much better than 1. It´s a different sort of game and they never did another Zelda quite like Z2.

Ducktales and Chip & Dale are absolute classics.

I don´t bother with Metroid because the snes game is again superior.

Punch Out on NES is actually a lot better than the SNES and arcade versions. There´s just a definite charm about its graphics style and gameplay on the NES. But then why doesnt this apply to Zelda 1 and Metroid? Because my opinions are not subjective, they are the TRUTH

R.C. Pro am and Ironman Stewarts Super Off Road are fun for a while but I like games with more defined goals more.

Probotector/Contra I never liked, dunno why.

i say buy a famicom instead, they look soo much prettier and tinier than the NES. I do have a soft spot for the european nes and its breeze block looks but i love the dinky famicom (and it will play every game anyway if you have a pin adapter and all at full speed too)

The video output on the Nes isn't very good at all even from new, so it may well be a wasted effort changing the capacitors. The Sega Master System has way better video, especially from RGB scart (and better games in my opinion too!)
