I think it is. I can't stop buying Amiga stuff. Amiga computers. Upgrades. Add-ons. More computers! More upgrades! More add-ons! Why can't I stop? Why do I have this insatiable urge to keep buying Amiga stuff?! I never even owned one back in the day. One of my school teachers had a C64 in the classroom and always talked about his Amiga at home. I used to check them out in the store and read Amiga magazines, but never owned one when they were still being produced. Why can I stop buying them now?! I swear it's a disease!!

:blink::blink::crying:

It's defiantly an addiction. Before I joined amibay I had an a600. Now I have a loft full of the stuff.

Before I joined amibay I had a cd32 as my only retro machine. Now I got 15 just in one of my three setups. Plus spares. and I'm still buying new old stuff. I started dedicating a week to each machine to give them all time, but at this rate I'll be revisiting each one once a year in 2020.. ;)

Yes more destructive and addictive than heroin. In many countries there are even law project to ban this product because more and more of middle age male and female population is using it (however the percentage of female population seems not to be as high). Some are even not ashamed of giving this drug to they children. Even WHO is trying to classify this specific addition and to verify the exact numer of world population that is touched by this addiction. However as for now their work are going slowly, as those kind of addicted persons are functioning in the society normaly for a very long period without any symptoms. Some scientist are saying that all retroaddicted (that how they call this) have after 1 year a completely "reprogrammed brain" and "are spending huge amount of money on junk for which they could buy a decent nowadays computer hundreds or thousands time faster". There are also some spirtual explanations but I haven't heard as for now too much about it. Some nonformal support groups fighting this addiction exist: AA - Amiga Anonymous and RATRM - Rage Against The Retro Machine. However as some reported one of the AA group have all his members implicated in a fraudulant act of stealing membership money for buying retro stuff. ;) :)

It's not only a drug, it's an expensive drug! :D

Bryce.

Retro-computing is itself a drug. However, when you suffer the lack of spare space at home, buying another one becomes a very meditated choice just for necessity.

I find it comes and goes in waves. Just when I think I have recovered then I seem to have a relapse.... :double

Of course there is, you just have to keep buying more Amigas since you can't ever have enough! :D

Yeah, I think it's more of a "Legal High " rather than a drug , definitely a costly addiction ,even tho it's worth it :)

The first time my girlfriend saw me looking on google the word Amiga, she was very angry with me ... my girlfriend thought I was looking at other girls.
Many explanations I had to give that night ...
Now I have to explain because I have so many at home ...

I don't think the wife is a cure- more of a suppressant......

@Harkonnen75
Yes indeed, as you are Spanish you must had have a very vey bad times as she knows the meaning of this word very well :D :)
@CrazyC
It's a cure somehow and a suppressant of the wallet ;) Less money and less retro stuff ;)

CrazyC: Amiga is a Spanish word meaning friend or girlfriend...a Spanish word meaning friend

I agree. the difference between if I wasn't having a spouse or not would be that i didn't need to hide anything if not. ;)

Yes! The wife simply caused me to move my addiction underground! Packages being delivered to the office instead of home! The new Amiga 1200 cases Kickstarter was dangerous. I had to order three cases, even though I own only two 1200's with nice white cases already. Then Petro had more long-lost cases! Had to buy two more of them... plus they came with brand new keyboards!! You can never have too many keyboards, right?

Oh and I scored three A4000's for FREE from another group, and that was like pouring gasoline on the fire. One of them is now completely refurbished (thank you tbtorro!) the other two awaiting refurbishement. I've bought all sorts of new components for my newly refurbed one, but it isn't even assembled yet!!!

Odd how other retro tech doesn't have as tight of a grip on me. I have a few older Macs, but lost interest fairly quickly. Some C64s, but I have restraint when it comes to C64 purchases. A Tandy COCO3, but it got put away in the closet. A Tandy 1000 TL/2, and it's in the closet with the COCO3. Apple IIe sitting on my desk at work, but never gets touched. Tons of retro game consoles, but they in the storage locker. But Amiga.... it is like retro-crack! No matter how hard I try to stay away, I keep getting sucked back in!

My problem is that I've made some money on machines I've sold and never paid for the majority of my collection. This allows me to justify the current idiotic asking prices for these machines. Getting a first production run A4000d with a great deal of history and paperwork for a quite good price has only made this worse.

Of course all of you don't help at all. This is quite the opposite of a support group for addicts. :sos

It is not just Amiga though - I have spent way too much on C64 stuff as well.. And since I don't have a wife, it is mainly the size of my apartment that hold me back from getting even more stuff, but I still manage to find new places for storage although I actually thought I ran out of space years ago. :-)
