I have been really busy today and I am belatedly catching up on things. Today is Remembrance Sunday in the UK, when we remember the fallen from all conflicts that our cherished ones have fought in to secure our freedom.
I normally relate some poetry related to one of the World wars, however, this year, I am talking a different view and I hope that you all can understand my reasons for doing this.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the guns fell silent, marking the end of World War I, the supposed "War to end all wars". We all know now that the statement made at the time isn't true, but it was a brave, noble and hopeful statement that also led to the League of Nations, whose goal was to ensure that war never broke out again.
With the benefit of hindsight, that noble cause was also flawed from the outset. The refusal of some countries to join the League of Nations, or the prevention of some countries from joining the League, created a weakness that ultimately led to the failure of the League to prevent further conflict from occurring.
"Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it..."
Those words are so true and still resonate today, with current conflicts that are happening around the World. Unless we truly remember the fallen and the causes that they died for, Mankind is doomed to repeat the same mistakes in the future.
We must truly embrace the phrase "Lest We Forget..."
