Hello fellow computer geniuses
AMIGA - my favorite sound and graphics palette of the computer world...
I am an american cellular tower engineer/operator and collector/creator of analog equipment/ telephone interfaces / synthesizers / experimental DJ controllers / ETC ETC ETC
I was first drawn to the amiga in 1996. my family had moved from sunny florida to plain boring old indiana. i was kinda mad about that … my mother had scraped up $300 to buy us an amiga 500 computer on christmas 1995. this was during a time when a packard bell running doom 2 would have cost $2000. I'm pretty sure it was a 500 since it had a 7mHz processor. and this was a 1989 model computer if i am correct.
It was pretty old overall, but to put into perspective, this thing was running some pretty fierce graphics for something that came to market the same year as the NES. I was hooked. Though a little embarrassed it couldnt run warcraft 2 like all my peers, ha!
Not only was this computer strange and unique, but it was also charming that my mother was somehow able to scrape this odd computer together on a budget, quite a deal actually ... It was of course packed with a lot of games and applications on floppy disk ... so many really great titles like speedball, wings, pirates, castles, chaos engine, simcity, lemmings, powermonger, wizball, ny warriors, king of chicago, eye of the beholder, dungeon master, hillsfar, … and i really liked lost dutchman mine
A lot of the allure of this machine was what i believe you people refer to as “demoscene” … it was always interesting, too, how many games used these kinda colored ‘frames’ or templates/menus surrounding the game. it was almost like a control panel, just there to take up some more space on the screen. and the high scores / demo modes always had this kinda vintage-futuristic arcade feel. plus you get into the paint/music/eetc programs, so much creative potential here!!
this computer stayed in the family until about 2002 when there was a break-in at the storage facility. but i always had these memories, calling me back ...
in 2011 i bought an amiga 1200 off ebay for about $150 .. but the power supply wouldn’t work, and i was too busy to revisit it at the time..
fast forward to now and i have started to revamp this amiga 1200 after all…
I opened the case and had to clean it out pretty extensively of course
i could tell the disks were trying to boot … but not getting any video signal from composite jack ?
eventually i was able to get a glimmer of the kickstart ROM screen , i knew it was thinking !!!
I kept tinkering with the RGB out and eventually I was able to get a black and white signal to flicker. kept tinkering and discovered the “hold both mouse buttons” trick. this let to a boot menu, where I was able to finals swap the output to NTSC!
from here i was able to attempt booting a disk. most wouldn’t boot at all …. but a couple were thinking a little. I got some game called “ Legends of valor” to show the title demo screen , but then it failed ! drat !
eventually I was able to boot
relokick, x-copy, and photon paint ! wow ! I actually booted this thing back up again with only the items on hand, the boot disks, and a few hints from the forums …. !
now I’m starting to order more parts from online retailers and booting up some programs etc. my goal is to run animation and sound programs with this 1200. its kinda like a muscle car and I’m ready to trick this thing out pretty hard, watch me go baby …
Updates will come !
I am currently stumped at the WIN-UAE prompt, I can partition the drive, but when I go to format it, I get the message "No disk in drive!"
