Can anyone advise if it is more likely to be my A4000 itself or the external keyboard? Note the mainboard was professionally recapped and traces repaired due to leaking battery damage around 2019.

Everything had been working fine. Recently I turned on the A4000 again after about long period (many months) of sitting idle. I have discovered the keyboard appears "laggy". Keyboard membrane was replaced in the past.

* The caps lock key is "laggy". It may need a few or multiple presses before the LED is lit. Also it may require multiple presses to be unlocked i.e. LED off.
* Numeric "+" key is not working.
* 'Q' key will sometimes register after the second press.
* Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga doesn't work.
* Right Amiga key is responsive, e.g. Right Amiga-Q to quit a program.

* Using VATTestProgram the keyboard test appears to pass but is not very responsive as in the past.
* Using DiagROM - same as above

all keys except numeric "+" are individually recognised but again not necessarily immediately and need an additional press.

Help!

You state that ctrl+A+A is not working.
Test through ATK if these keys are working without having to press them multiple times, one by one.
It seems your keyboard has the problem or maybe CIA even?

Thanks for responding. I'm glad to say to the problem has now been fixed.

I thought I'd give the pencil lead graphite quick fix on the numeric '+' key a try. As I had the keyboard open I just went ahead and did all the contact pads. The keys all work now, including Ctrl-A-A. Some very minor hesitancy to register immediately on a few keys. I suspect the physical rubber/springs are simply aged.

A problematic CIA was the worst fear! I had also wondered whether the still original through hole caps on the keyboard's internal mini PCB needed changing! Has anyone ever recapped those?

Still it might be worth buying a usb/ps-2 adapter as a contingency or to serve as a diagnostic tool...

You can swap CIAs in case you may notice any difference.
About the caps. I doubt that they are causing the problem.
