I have to admit when people refer to the ZX Spectrum as speccy i would love to punch them in the face a few times. It just goes through me so much and makes me very very angery.

If it was called Speccy then fair enough but its not its called Spectrum. Speccy sounds like if its got a girls name or something and its very .... lame.

I like to call it the black or grey beast because it is just that. It made major waves in the computer market and people are still making games and hardware for it even when its not even the "in" thing.

I only ask whats in a name.... would a rose by any other name still smell as sweet?

I use "speckies" or "specky's" when refering to these cute bundles of retrolicous joy =)

at times I am known to call them by their name and issue number ;)

Besides, what's wrong with a girly-sounding name? Everyone knows computers are even better when you anthropomorphize them as cute girls ;)

It depends. A rose works all the time. A speccy may not.
Thus, a speccy may be called a "rose" or a ******* piece of ****
And I have never had a speccy smell of rose. Burned silicon yes, flowery perfume scent, no....

Good, so you don't mind if I call it a "ZX Spectrum" instead of that military sounding "Zed X Spectrum" then??

:p

How are you pronouncing it then? I've tried to work out in my head how else to pronounce ZX Spectrum

Zed Ecks Spectrum is how I do it.

Zee Ks Spectrum?

Sed axe spectrum?

Zed [silent X] Spectrum? ;)

You and everyone else this side of the pond, I should think!

Zee Ks Spectrum?

Zeeyecks Spectrum?

As for "Speccy" - makes me think of geeky glasses! (Yeah, like the ones I wear.)

And there is something in a name - take the Amiga's "Workbench" for example. PC and Mac have a "Desktop" - conjures up images of polished wood, paperwork, business suits and ties.
"Workbench" on the other hand, makes me thing of a solid relatively rough-finished bench where you can tinker with stuff. Seems appropriate, somehow!

I've always pronounced the letter Z kind of like... er.. um.. Z.. :D

As in Zee...

Zed?
Reminds me of the name of my mom's uncle's 3rd cousin twice removed from down south..

Well, I'm in Norfolk. There are plenty of parallels between this part of the UK and the Southern States of the US of A apparently.
A fondness for motor sports that use an oval, pick up trucks, and blood relatives as potential life partners. ;)

I still don't see it as a reason to change the pronunciation of a letter, "Zed" being the correct (ie. English) way, just because there are people in USA that call their child by a single letter to make it easier for them to spell it.

I think your on your own mocar mate. I use the term Speccy quite often and well, it's the same for car owner's clubs too. 'Dollie's' for example (AKA: 'Triumph Dolomite'). If you get that wound up about it, no offence but i'd look at trying to manage that anger better if it really annoys you to that degree.

the english Zed pronnounciation of Z was changed to zee in the states so it would fit better with the alphabet song. it rhymes better if you say Zee instead of Zed.
same with the droping of U in most "our" ending words.

you can take offence to tgis and say it is wrong. But english is and always has been a amaglimation of other languages including my native welsh, and latin (infact both welsh and english derive from lattiin. but i degress)
Basically what im saying is that english evolves spellings change and so does the pronounciation,
before dictionarys were written you could travel countys of england and the dialects of one would virtualy be an entierly new language compared to the other. this is one of the reasons a dictionary was even made to unify the the language "i believe and i may be wrong that the dialect chosen for the english came from some part of the west midlands"

so dont be to hard on the pronounciation..
Its just english and a dialect there of..

Well i've always affectionately referred to the ZX Spectrum as,
"Uncle Clive's finest turd in the box". :p

But then that's what you get for being raised as an Acorn lad.

TC

Erm, "Zulu X-Ray Spectrum Four Eight Kilo.....?"

God, that sounds epic as a military name....

.....

Maybe you can find a better way to share your ideas? :)

The Zed Ecks Spectrum was called a speccy by a lot of people at the time it was out, although i always just called it a spectrum.

The Spectrum I had at the time was nicknamed 'Brain Damage', as it used to crash quite a lot. The Kempstom joystick interface I had plugged into it wasn't a tight fit and it worked loose when someone walked across the carpet.

The name 'Brain Damage' was made up in black Dymo tape (very '80s ) and stuck to the case.

I've still got a Dymo tape machine at work; I might just create a replica of 'Brain Damage', but I'll need to score a Kempston joystick interface first.
