Up until 3 years ago or so MAME never gave me any problems.

I'd just place the ROMS and BIOS's in the ROMS directory and everything just worked.

But with these newer versions of MAME it always complains about stupid things like missing roms, bad file sizes and whatever.

This is with ROMS that were working fine previously. I have even tried re-downloading them and still same hassle. Almost NOTHING works.

I need to know if there is a way to fix the roms, or a new version of MAME with all the bells and whistles of new versions of MAME but without the compatibility problems.

I'm using MameUI64 (0.150 Oct27 20113) and it works fine. I put this in place to fix issues that I was having with the previous versions. Have a try with that?

Cheers

The game ROMs are often redumped, replacing what may have been bad or suspect dumps with the correct files. It can be especially annoying when you've got loads of sets that suddenly become bad. The options you have are to either use an older version of the MAME .exe that looks for the older ROMs, or download the updated files from somewhere.

You can use the -verifyroms option to tell you what ROMs are needed and do a search for the specifc filename & checksum. It can be a bit of a slog when there are loads of ROM hosting websites that still have the out of date files but you should find them eventually.

Same problem for me... https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=53038

I have now just got a couple of different versions of MAME installed and I run the problem games on the older version. Not perfect but I haven't got time to mess around and be a perfectionist these days - I would prefer just one set up though!

That did the trick :)

Still a current version of mame with HLSL and all the ROMS are working.

As Zoltar said, the MAME project often redump roms or change the way they utilise rom files from different dependant rom sets. This can mean older roms are just not compatible with newer versions.

Sorry for the hijack but I too am having problems, ive got mame 0.149, downloaded a big rom set, thats ok, downloaded samples, marquees, cheat file, put them in there respected folders and nothing, doesnt detect any of them. Ive rescanned, unzipped the files, scanned again, nowt. Its particularly galling as my son likes to blast through a few games with the cheats on and now he cant (put the 7z file in the cheats folder and pointed the gui at it, plus I put it where the main .exe is just in case, nada.
I had all this running a few years ago flawlessly, damn frustrating that I cant do it now!
