Modern Alternatives to Old Games?

On a side-note. I think Game stop are an evil company (I feel the same about Tesco, Walmart, etc.) and that you should boycott them.

Boycotts are probably a great way to get rid of and evil company.

If Amibay offered a grocery service then I would use them.

(but if they turned evil then I would boycott them)

:D

I was just remembering when I first played the Tony Hawk Pro Skater on the Dreamcast it reminded me a lot of Skate or Die. There are a few downhill levels in the original THPS that captured the feel of the two downward-scrolling levels, plus any half-pipe or pool reminded me of the rest of the game. Now you have Skate 1-3 and Tony Hawk HD (which has the downhill levels from the original THPS) and even Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam to fill that niche.

Also when I first played Need For Speed on the 3DO it reminded me of playing Test Drive on the C64. A peek at the wiki states that it isn't unfounded as the original studio that made NFS worked on Test Drive II and Stunts. While we still have Test Drive games this would still be an alternative. Although some NFS titles sound like they capture the feel of the original Test Drive more than others.

Another thing that pops into my head now is The Unholy War on the PS1. The game reminded me of Archon and Star Control (the latter of which is probably because it is made by the Star Control creators, Toys For Bob). Anyone else know of anything that reminds them of either?

Wonder if I should keep track of people's suggestions in my original post..

For some great flight sims have a look a the DCS series. Black Shark 2 and A10 Warthog are most excellent :D

I finally looked these up. Holy cow they're expensive! o.O $50 for each different plane/copter??

I also did end up downloading the free Trackmania on Steam and quite enjoyed it. The Track editor reminded me of Stunts.

Don't forget that the main DCS World is a free download (and comes with one attack plane), so you can give it a good go on your system and see if you like that kind of thing (and if your system is up to the task!) :-)

The trick with the DCS ones is to wait for sales - they knock quite a bit off during sales (they made a mistake last time and had the P51D on offer for $10) :-)

Edit:

Keeping track of suggestions is a really good idea - then we can all use it to try out new stuff :-)

And both Tiny Troopers and Tiny Troopers 2 are free on iOS (I've just checked!) :-)

Sadly not as good as CF1, apparently (not played them yet - but watched a walk-through review of the first bit and the controls are supposedly a bit lacking) :-(

What did you think of them TroelsDK ?

Oh yeah tiny troopERS :)

I bought them both for around 2€ but as for other games they are free from time to time.. I just love those games, even though I'm playing them on iphone and not ipad I think it's manageable.. They remind me so much of cannon fodder, and I've always love those :D

Hired Guns web remake: http://cherno.cwsurf.de/hg1/hg6web.html

Also not sure if I'm allowed to mention: Hired Guns 2 was or is out there, tho not finished, akin to Thrill Kill on PS1 when it was cancelled.

I used to enjoy Master of Monsters on the Genesis/Mega Drive. There is a game that takes inspiration from it called Battle for Wesnoth.

I had a thought just now as I was looking at a screen for Trine 3... That series of games is essentially another take on The Lost Vikings. Quite a bit more linear, you're 3 people in one body vs 3 people, but the puzzle element remains similar. I should really just make it my thing to find modern alternatives as I'm thinking about this stuff quite often....

dungeon master had a modern remake.

the original is still supported on original hardware with extra/different maps etc, although they are for the hardened play they are alot harder difficulty wise.
bonus is it works on 1200's.

Speaking of originals still being supported.... They should make a map editor for the Alternate Reality games. There is a remake of Alternate Reality which will encompass the first two games... but I'd be happy with a way to "finish" the other planned games...
