I just came across this picture which shows an adjusted GoTek drive to fit the Amiga case (in this case an Amiga 500) nicely.

It also made me relive the horror of seeing molested Amiga cases were people thought it made total sense to alter the case of their beloved Amiga just to make a cheap 20 bucks drive fit the casing.

Please.. for the love of all that is holy and dear to you.. make that GoTek fit the Amiga like you see on the picture attached

Roy .. I hope it's not "most" .. that would make me sad :(

However, if I had a case that was already cracked or in otherwise bad condition I would probably consider it.

With my A600 I was lucky enough to have a spare completely white case, so I modified the one currently in use, which wasn't quite so yellow.

I also have a cracked A1200 case spare which I might modify.

However, once you fit a Gotek, what's the likelihood of taking it out and putting the floppy drive back in? And you can't argue that in the future when the Gotek fails you will need to because they are so cheap and easy to find. Plus floppy disks from the 90's are right at the very extended end of their shelf life and are all going to start failing pretty soon, making a lot of original and backup disks unusable.

I'm currently getting my Kryoflux to work converting my collection over to ADF, but it will take me some time. Better now than too late though.

Its a shame to cut up Amiga , especially since new drive solutions will appear in time and the people will be after new cases...

not a problem with most amiga's , they made millions.

I totally agree - the case should never be hacked.
But even that way, the result is very ugly. The proper place for a Gotek is not inside the A500 chassis but in an external drive enclosure. It actually looks pretty there :)
A floppy drive must always be present inside the A500. That's how things were meant to be :)

i would say going by the ones i have seen its quite high percentage wise.

In my quest to squeeze a Mac Mini G4 into a CD32 Case I've found there are a couple things in the way that impair the desired placement, but in no way do I want to cut up any plastics on or in the case. Still in the plotting stages.

I've changed in recent years , I can't even gut a c2n now ....I mean come on it still works after all these years :)

I used to be that way, not wanting to ruin anything I owned. However for some reason, since becoming a Dad, I have changed the way I think and just think we should enjoy things now and not worry about the future. If they fail then so be it. And if they need modifying to make something fit, then as long as it's done well I'm OK with it. For so many years I owned a lot of things I hardly used or enjoyed because I wanted to keep them pristine. No more! I'm not saying I will wreck anything I own because I still like to be careful and treat everything with respect, but I have decided to fully use and enjoy everything I own to it's fullest.

I second the dad thing. I've axed most of my video game collection both for room, diaper money, and peace of mind. I never had time for most stuff, and the stuff I did I was too distracted to use. Who knows, maybe my CD32 case will become the first slot-loading CD32... the stupid hinge on the thing will probably break eventually anyways (it's happened to me twice before with my CD32's, and with one it was around 1995 shortly after getting it)

I used to be all preservationist but my a1200 has had more use in the last week of sticking in the gotek drive (I did cut the case to fit it in, looks neat though) than its had in the last 7/8 years as its never been touched since the disk drive died. At the end of the day I just want to play on the thing now :-)

I have noticed that many Amiga users don't seem to care much about how their machines look and have an "as long as it works" mentality. Obviously being functional is the most important thing, but to enjoy using a computer it needs to look nice too IMO. It always baffles me when people have black optical drives in their white Amiga desktops, the case off all the time, or monitors that don't remotely match etc. Most of this old gear is cheap enough now to be a bit selective. I mean look at this monstrosity:

Well, look at mine.
It took me ages to find the proper part to have both a slim CD/DVD burner and the 3,5' powered usb hub, so i'm not difficult with the color.

I agree with Harrison + bobpard, so long as the case is modded neatly I have no concerns with it being updated to allow current technology to make the A1200 more usable.

I would place more value on an a1200 with a neatly modded case and gotek fitted, than on an original a1200 with a floppy drive that may or may not load some games - dependent on the alignment of the stars and moon, the depth of the tide etc.

I think some amiga owners like to be anally retentive just for the sake of being so, hopefully that doesn't describe us all.

To me it's all about modding an Amiga in stealth mode. I used to like heavy case modifications but not anymore since such hardware isn't produced nowadays as all of us know. I think that a Gotek can be easily hosted without cutting the case which could be brought back to its original state if/when the Gotek is removed . Take a look at my version and even though it might all seem greek to you :D the photos speak for themselves

In case someone has the ability to solder a new tiny lcd screen and drive it through the floppy button hole, then everything could be perfect. I intend to complete this mod in the next weeks. The whole Gotek installation isn't anything special really but i think this is the only way to keep the case intact for further use.

Personally I disagree with any permanent modding, be it a little hole for a kickstart switch or a paint job or a Gotek fitting.

Then again, I do understand that It would be great to have the Gotek fitted neatly in the case without shelling out upward of 30 euros for a Gotek fitting kit.

Personally I just got a floppy cable and power cable extension and passed them through the drive disk slot and kept the drive outside of the Amiga.

I nice option if they had to be cheaply priced would be a Drive Selector which can switch round DF0 and DF1. Then a Gotek can be fitted in an external floppy drive and plugged into the floppy port and the internal drive can remain in its place and functional as DF1. And whenever one would want to test or use a real disk just switch them back. But those damn selectors are expensive for something which in the end of the day is simply just a moddified socket.
