On a serious note, as the primary purpose of Amibay is a trading post meaning people of all ages and backgrounds come here, i'd like to see less use of swears and rude words / implications. I want Amibay to crush ebay for Amiga based trading so I think it needs to ensure that people are not put off using the site. Just my 2p's worth!

I wrote this yesterday but was reluctant to post as I did not want to cause a fuss... but after the above posts here it is..
I have been thinking about Amibay and how it is evolving and would like to post some observations and ideas that are milling around in my head.
Please remember that these are not criticisms, I am not calling anyone or claiming I am right, they are opinions..
By its nature, Amibay will appeal to a very wide cross section of users, for example I know Amiga users in their 70's....so with this in mind I think it would be curtious if all users refrained from swearing or at least actual swearing, disguising the word a little (b*****d etc) takes little effort, still gets the message accross but is less likely to offend.
Regarding AmiRant, merlin wrote... I agree but might it not be better in the members area so it is not stumbled upon by the prospective new Amibayer? unless of course it is public to try to create a little self moderation?

I totally agree; I would much prefer that members carry out some self-censorship, before a Moderator has to do it for them. I take no pleasure from peppering a post with edits, just because a member cannot show a little restraint. This is a general comment and not aimed at anyone in particular.....
It is for this reason that I think it should stay in a public area, in order that some peer pressure comes to bear on the worst offenders.

I also agree with this. I think an profanities should be restricted to the staff area and PMs.
What would you all think to a word filter being setup that replaces any obvious swearing with ******?

If someone swore at me in a PM that would probably annoy me more, it is then directed at me.
I think not, if a post is edited by a Mod, and a this is pointed out, then hopefully this should be enough.

Anyway, if people can't observe the simple rules I have laid down in the Sticky, I will pull the plug on AmiRant, simple as.....it's not meant to be a Swear Box.

I find it hard to understand why anyone would swear on a website dedicated to buying and selling.

I frequent many military based forums that even have the swear filters in your PM's! The inventive use of alternatives grows more amusing daily.

To be honest, I am glad that people have stood up to be counted about this; AmiBay should be about what the members want, not what the Admins and Moderators impose.
I am very happy to uphold the rules on offensive language on the site, it's not needed or wanted.

i quite like having a place to chat that sometimes becomes a fun and lets say colourful place, but as an adult in a mainly adult scene i would like a place (maybe a section that is over 18 and by invite only) no i don't mean an adult site lol but maybe a "only enter if not easily offended" whilst i agree with protecting the innocent i also believe in free speech. if you read my posts you will see that (as far as i can remember) i have not sworn, but that's not the point, i should be able to at the appropriate time i.e my networking problems have almost driven me to a tirade of abuse and i feel it would be a bad thing to bottle this up for too long
anyway that's what i think so there!!

Hmm... I don't personally see such a forum as being of much use or point on here. It is easy to express your frustrations or vent anger without resorting to swear words. At least it is outside of the USA where we can express ourselves using words longer than 4 letters and beginning with letters other than F.
And if it were a topic for example as you mentioned, relating to a hardware or network issue that you were frustrated about, then being in public view, with possible solutions to such problems also posted, would benefit the site much more than posting such a topic in a locked and hidden forum just so a few profanities can be included.

By all means, let's have a section for 'adult' discourse, jokes and such (access by request only - just like the Recycle Bin) ... But in area's where Joe public has access, there's no call for and certainly no need to litter posts with swearing.

ok maybe i didn't express my views very well (my fault not yours) the example was just that an example (admittedly a bad one) but the point i was making was i am over 18 and i live in a country where people gave their lives for free speech, self control i think is obvious, but there should still be an outlet for adults to enjoy themselves with the odd humorous post or topic without fear of being banned by mods (certain post on here have indeed been started by mods).
