Hi everyone. My name's Don and I'm extremely new to Atari computers. I managed to pick up a broken Atari 1040 STF with memory issues off eBay about a month ago. I finally traced it down to a memory issue with help from a friend of mine and a diagnostic cartridge. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and desoldering gun. I picked up a HDD emulator and have been poking around the internet to see what I've missed being a PC user and a little too young to have one of these when they came out.
Another friend gave me a broken Atari 800XL that I'm trying to nurse back to health. It had no memory when I got it so I grabbed 8 chips from Console5 and I'm waiting on a shipment with some new double-wipe sockets and memory capacitors. I'm hoping it's as easy as a couple of bodge wires to fix an issue from whomever tried to re-work this computer and installing the new sockets and capacitors. I might need help from someone at some point.
I got started with all of this stuff with my dad who would build most of the electronics we used on a day-to-day basis from Heathkit projects. He also worked for a couple of fairly well-known arcade companies in the San Francisco Bay Area when I was growing up and I got to hang out on the weekends and help with the "burn-in" process on the games before they shipped.
Since then, I spent a lot of my free time fixing and modifying older consoles to be used on more modern displays. Here's a list of some of my projects:
