I'm a reasonably long term Linux seller, having installed Debian 2 on an se/30 and Debian 3 onwards on PC's. What killed my interest was issues with sound card support and exactly the sort of hopeless complexity outlined above. The other bugbears are nvidia and radeon support, and wireless cards. It is no help when so-called gurus say 'it works' - you only have to search the web to see plenty with the same problems. Sure some of it is hardware companies fault, but the lack of clarity and simplicity in communication of how to do things has utterly destroyed my interest in Linux. I tried Ubuntu recently - yes the nvidia drivers seem better sorted, and the low latency kernel installed OK, but wireless is still an Achilles heel. No usable documentation on what works (ie what card to buy with any guarantee it works for sure with ubuntu 1204) and what frankly looks like clutching at straws - I should use some tool to make use of windows drivers.
Linux has a lot of potential but involves too many hassles to be a pleasant experience for desktop and multimedia in my recent experience.
